Stamps Fall To Lions In Tight Battle

The Red and White dropped their second straight game on a rainy evening at McMahon Stadium 30-26 to the BC Lions.

Quarterback Josh Love entered the game in place of an injured Vernon Adams Jr. in the third quarter. The Lions defence held the Stamps to just eight points in the second half en route to the win.

The Calgary offence picked up a pair of field goals from Jude McAtamney to take a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The big boot nailed a 55-yarder and 14-yard kick to put the Stamps ahead early.

The following defensive drive, pivot Nathan Rourke completed a pass to Jermaine Jackson who fumbled and Zy Alexander was there to pick up the loose ball.

That brought out the Stamps offence, and McAtamney, who for the third time in the quarter had to kick a 29-yard attempt, putting the Red and White up 9-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Late in the second quarter the Stamps offence broke through for a touchdown when Adams connected with Erik Brooks on a 15-yard reception in the endzone. The catch marked the end of a nine-play 64-yard drive.

Calgary closed out the half up 18-13 after another McAtamney field goal.

Fast track to the second half, the Stamps defence came up huge with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Anthony Johnson picked off a Rourke pass attempt and brought the ball back to Lions territory.

Short-yardage quarterback Quincy Vaughn punched in the one-yard touchdown to take a 24-23 lead. Love completed a two-point conversion pass attempt to Damien Alford who hauled it in to take a three-point lead with three minutes remaining in the game.

The Lions defence tacked on another touchdown, closing out the game with a win at McMahon Stadium.

The Red and White will have a bye in Week 12 and will return back to McMahon Stadium for a Week 13 tilt with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Aug. 29 with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. MT
