It may carry the same name, but it’s an entirely new building.

The Stampeders will take in the brand new, state-of-the-art facility that is new Mosaic Stadium and all of its amenities for the first time on Sunday.

But just like the original, the new one features the same raucous crowd and incredible atmosphere.

The noise is something with which veteran Stamps receiver Marquay McDaniel is quite familiar.

“It was always loud out there every game,” McDaniel said of the previous edition of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ home.

“All game.

“For this one, from seeing it on TV and hearing everything, I expect the same thing. Maybe even a little bit louder since it holds more people than the last one. I expect them to be hyped up. They don’t like us, so it’ll be a battle going in there.”

Since 2010, the Stamps have played very well on the road in Regina, having won seven of 10 games.

Calgary will be looking to keep that road dominance going this weekend.

With a new building comes new challenges and new routines, but head coach Dave Dickenson knows that, inside the lines, it’s still just football.

“A field is a field, it’s the same dimensions and all that,” Dickenson said. “We know it’s going to be loud and it’s going to be a fun place to play. But it’s always nice to know where to go and where you’ll come out of the tunnel and that sort of stuff. We’ll just have to use this game as our first run at it.”

But those concerns don’t bother McDaniel. He’ll be focusing on himself and football, not the other distractions that come with visiting a new stadium for the first time.

“It doesn’t really affect me because it’s their stadium,” admitted McDaniel. “We’ll get in a few hours before the game and that’s plenty of time to go on the field and walk around and check it out, so that won’t matter to me at all.”

One Stampeder is especially excited to get into the new place.

Running back Jerome Messam, who used to call Mosaic Stadium home, is hoping to suit up and get on the field in the new building.

“If I do play, I’m going to be super excited. Just stoked,” said Messam. “I know it’s going to be a super high-energy game, it’s going to be very loud. So, hopefully it’s going to be a packed house. Hopefully our fans can come out and make the drive and give us some support in that way. It’s going to be an exciting game.”

Messam spent parts of two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, before being traded to Calgary in 2015.

“Lots of memories, man,” reminisced Messam.

“I’ll never forget when I got there in 2014. The first Labour Day Classic I played there, it was just an awesome feeling running out of the tunnel with the team. It felt like I was in an NFL stadium, pretty much. Great vibes.”

He’s expecting more of the same in the new stadium on Sunday.

“It’s going to be a bit of an event to take in, I guess. I saw the stadium before, I’ve been in the new one. I saw the plans when they were unveiling it, but I’m just excited to get into the stadium and play some football.”
