Football is a fun game.

And no one is having more fun out on the field than second-year middle linebacker Alex Singleton.

“I love it,” said Singleton. “I love how our guys play. All 12 guys are playing really well and it’s fun to be out there. Everyone is making plays and everyone is having fun and we’re celebrating. Meetings are easier when people are playing well during the games. It makes practice easier, it makes the week easier. It’s a really good time right now.”

Coming off of an 11-tackle game that included a quarterback sack, the Montana State alum now has 35 tackles in his past three games and the 23-year old is the first player in CFL history to have three games in a row with double-digit tackles.

The big game also allowed Singleton to pull even with Lions linebacker Solomon Elimimian for the league lead in tackles with 91 and earned the long-haired linebacker the Player of the Week honour for Week 13.

After the record-setting night, he was quick to pass the praise to his coaches.

“I don’t know who finds these kind of stats, but it’s pretty cool,” Singleton said through a smile.

“The plays came to me. It’s all Coach (DeVone) Claybrooks and (linebacker coach) Brent Monson getting me in the right position to make plays.

“I feel like I’m just doing what they’re asking me to do. Just make the plays that come to me and I feel like that’s what I’ve been doing.”

So what’s his secret to seemingly always being around the football?

Running.

And lots of it.

“First day of camp, we say we’re the Calgary track team, so we just run to the ball,” said Singleton. “It’s all about effort and that’s how you play in this league. It’s a big field and you’ve got to be able to run. Most of the guys on offence are faster than me, so as long as I run and get around the ball, good things will happen.”

During the last two games, the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native has been putting on a show for family, friends and former teammates that have been coming to his games.

And wouldn’t you know, he’s got some former teammates coming to next weekend’s game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“I actually spend all of my game cheques on people coming to visit,” joked Singleton.

“In Saskatchewan, I do have former teammates coming up. I will have friends at that game.”
