Here’s a closer look at the Stamps’ 23-7 victory over the Toronto Argonauts at McMahon Stadium on Saturday:

Five alive

Calgary has extended its winning streak to five games, which ties Winnipeg for the longest active streak.

The Stamps have had a string of victories of at least five games in each of the past four seasons.

The Red and White have also put 14 straight regular-season home games in the win column, the second-longest streak in franchise history (the Stamps won 27 in a row at McMahon from 1992-95). Their current run is also tied for the seventh-longest home winning streak all-time in the CFL.

Defence on duty

The Stamps defence pitched a virtual shutout on Saturday as the only Argos points came on an interception-return touchdown and subsequent convert.

Calgary leads the CFL so far this season with just 169 points allowed (an average of 18.8 points per game). That’s almost a converted touchdown less than the second-stingiest squad, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who have given up an average of 25.4 points per contest.

What’s remarkable about the Stamps’ points-allowed numbers is that Ottawa put up 70 points on Calgary in the home-and-home series to open the 2017 season, which means just 99 points have been surrendered in the past seven games.

Of those opposition points since Week 3, there was a fumble-return touchdown by the Alouettes in Week 4 and the Toronto pick-six on Saturday. That means the Stamps defensive unit has given up just nine touchdowns in the past seven games.

Through the first four games, Calgary allowed 110 total points while the opposition has managed just 59 in the five most recent games.

Holding firm in the first

The Stamps defence has been especially staunch in the early going with just 16 first-quarter points allowed all season.

Calgary has shut out the opposition in the opening quarter five times this season including four times in the past five games. The only touchdown surrendered in the first 15 minutes of a game came in Week 7 at Toronto.

Getting the job done

The play of the defence has allowed the Stamps to keep their winning streak going even though the offensive output has been below average the past two weeks.

Calgary has scored a total of 44 points in the past two games – Week 9 in Vancouver and Saturday against Toronto. That’s the lowest production in back-to-back Stamps wins since Calgary scored a total of 36 points in consecutive victories over Hamilton and Edmonton in July of 2014.

Roy-al performance

It was another big night for running back/returner Roy Finch, who contributed 202 all-purpose yards.

Here’s the breakdown for Finch – 35 receiving yards, four rushing yards, 54 kickoff-return yards and 109 punt-return yards. The 43-yard punt return was his seventh statistical big-play – a punt return of at least 30 yards or a kickoff/missed-field goal return of 40 or more – of the season.

Meanwhile, the triple-digit punt-return yardage allowed Finch to pass both Terry Vaughn and Larry Taylor and move into seventh place on the Stampeders’ all-time list. He now has 1,666 punt-return yards in 23 career regular-season games as a Stamp.

When it comes to his 2017 numbers, Finch has 673 punt-return yards, which is already the 12th-best single-season total in Stamps history even though it’s just the midway point of the schedule and the University of Oklahoma speedster has played just seven of the nine games to date.

The team record of 993 punt-return yards in a single season – set by Finch last year – is in serious jeopardy.

At the half

Saturday’s contest marked the end of the first half of the Stamps’ regular season as Calgary compiled a 7-1-1 mark through nine games for a second straight season.

It’s been 32 years since the CFL expanded the regular-season schedule to 18 games and this year marks the 11th time the Stamps have recorded at least seven wins by the midway point. The Red and White have been at least 7-2 six times since 2008 including the past five seasons in a row.

Rene’s making Hay

With his second field goal on Saturday, Rene Paredes moved past J.T. Hay for second place in career field goals by a Stampeder.

Paredes now has 284 three-pointers, two more than the 282 Hay booted during his Stamps career from 1979-88.

In another milestone, Bo Levi Mitchell upped his total of career touchdown passes to 107, moving him ahead of Peter Liske for fourth all-time in the Stamps record books. Next up for Mitchell is Jeff Garcia at 111.
