Here’s a closer look at Friday’s game in Montreal:
Misery in Montreal
The Stamps have been an excellent road team in recent seasons but they continue to be stymied at Percival Molson Stadium.
The Red and White have now dropped four straight games in Montreal, with Calgary’s most recent win in the city dating back to July 12, 2013. Since the start of the 2014 season, the Stamps are 0-4 at Percival Molson and a cumulative 21-3-1 in all other enemy buildings.
Tackling machine
It was less than a year ago that Alex Singleton became the Stampeders’ starting middle linebacker and already he’s compiling some impressive statistics.
His 10 tackles against the Alouettes on Friday, for example, leave him just one shy of 100 for his career. It’s already his second double-digit tackle game in the CFL as he brought down 10 Ottawa RedBlacks in a Sept. 17 game last season.
Only three other Stamps linebackers have hit double digits in the tackles over the past 10 years – Deron Mayo in 2016, Juwan Simpson in 2011 and Tim Johnson in 2009.
Singleton also has a pair of nine-tackle games so far this season and is on pace for 153 tackles, which would obliterate the franchise record of 122 set by Doug (Tank) Landry in 1989. The only other Stamp to crack the 100-tackle mark in a season since that particular stat started being officially tracked in 1987 is George White, who brought down 118 opponents in 2005.
Closing in on a milestone
Bo Levi Mitchell needs one more touchdown throw to join some elite company.
At 99 career TD passes, Mitchell is on the verge of joining Henry Burris (203), Doug Flutie (140), Jeff Garcia (111) and Peter Liske (106) as the only quarterbacks to reach 100 as members of the Red and White.
His 379 passing yards in a losing cause on Friday represented the best total for a regulation game in Mitchell’s career, surpassed only by the 380 yards he amassed in Edmonton on Sept. 5, 2016, in a contest the Stamps won in overtime.
Mitchell also attempted a career-high 50 passes on Friday and was not intercepted. The second-highest number of attempts in a single game came earlier this season in Week 1 at Ottawa as he attempted 48 passes without an interception.
Next men up
In Montreal, Michael Kashak made his CFL debut, Reuben Frank made his first appearance as a Stamp and Ben D’Aguilar played the first game of his second stint with Calgary.
Their presence raised the number of Stamps defensive linemen who have dressed for at least one game this season to 12, and that doesn’t even count linebacker Wynton McManis, who was moved from linebacker to play on the defensive line on an emergency basis in Week 3.
Injuries have taken their toll, especially at defensive end. With Cordarro Law, Ja’Gared Davis, Charleston Hughes, Kashawn Fraser and Aston Whiteside all on the injured list, none of the four players listed at defensive end on the depth chart for the contest against the Als – Kashak, Frank, D’Aguilar and James Vaughters – had a single CFL start to their credit prior to Friday.
Back on track
After suffering through some early-season struggles, Rene Paredes has now made the second-most field goals of any CFL kicker this year after going a perfect five-for-five in Montreal.
The seven-year Stampeder is also an unblemished six-for-six on converts away from home. In addition, Paredes currently sits second in league scoring with 42 points.
