After going five-for-five in Friday night’s overtime victory over the BC Lions, Rene Paredes may finally be back on track.

Despite a slow start to the season which saw the six-year veteran struggle to split the uprights, Paredes will look to keep things rolling against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in three day’s time.

“I’ve been hitting my field goals pretty good I think (this year),” remarked the former Concordia placekicker. “Obviously, this game was my best and it will build my confidence for the rest of the season. I’ve just got to take it kick-by-kick and game-by-game and keep working hard in practice.”

Having nailed his last 11 field goals overall dating back to July 8 in Ottawa, Paredes is also focused on increasing his average when it comes to one-point convert attempts following Stampeders touchdowns.

“The whole game, I felt I was in a good rhythm,” No. 30 offered when asked about his performance against the Lions. “I was pretty satisfied, but I still missed a PAT which still bothers me. But I’ve just got to keep working hard and good things will happen.”

Making the trip from Montreal to witness the win over BC were Paredes’ proud parents, which perhaps supplied extra motivation to perform at a high level.

“They’re coming on Thursday night too, so it will be nice for them to watch two games at home,” noted the Quebec-raised product with a smile.

Head coach Dave Dickenson was asked to assess the play of Paredes in the days leading up the Calgary’s most recent victory and, judging by his comments, the first-year bench boss may very well have seen this coming.

“It’s a lot about just basically ironing out your details and then tuning everybody else out and getting back to what made you the most accurate kicker in the league,” Dickenson said following last week’s Day 1 practice. “I’m very confident and I like Rene’s work ethic. He comes in ready to go.”

In addition to currently sitting two made field goals shy of the RedBlacks’ league-leader in Chris Milo, Paredes has six times been true from 40-49 yards out, a statistic that ties him with Lirim Hajrullahu of Toronto for the CFL lead.

Paredes holds a pair of CFL records, having gone 39 consecutive field goals without a miss as well as registering a 94.7-per cent success rate for the 2013 campaign.

“Every time they put me on the field, that’s my job – make the field goals and get three points on the board every time,” stated the reigning all-star, who is on pace to make his 100th regular-season appearance in the Labour Day rematch. “Three points, they’re big every time.”
