Defensive backs coach

CFL: 16th season
Stamps: 1st season

Miles is in his first season as the Stampeders’ defensive backs coach after 15 years of sideline experience around the CFL as well as a distinguished 12-year playing career with the Montreal Alouettes and BC Lions.

Miles began his coaching career in 2010 with the Lions, the club with which he had concluded his playing career the previous season. He served in that role for two years and in 2011 was part of a defensive coaching staff that oversaw a unit that allowed a league-low 21.4 points per game.

From 2012 to 2014, Miles was defensive backs coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Safety Tyron Brackenridge was a division and league all-star in both 2013 and 2014 while halfback Dwight Anderson was a West all-star in 2013. The Roughriders led the CFL in interceptions in 2013.

Mills was the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ DB coach in 2015. Johnny Adams was a West Division all-star that season after sharing the league lead in interceptions.

In 2016, Miles moved to Edmonton and was the Green and Gold’s defensive backs and player development coach for four years. In 2017, the secondary boasted West and CFL all-star Kenny Ladler and helped Edmonton finish with the league’s second-best pass defence. In 2019, Edmonton’s defence allowed the fewest passing yards in the CFL.

Miles was hired as Montreal’s defensive backs coach and run game coordinator in 2020 and was promoted to defensive coordinator when the league resumed play in 2021 after a one-year hiatus. He remained in that role until July 6, 2022. In 2021, the Als defence led the league in sacks and two-and-outs forced while defensive lineman David Ménard and defensive back Monshadrik Hunter were East Division all-stars.

Miles was named the Ottawa Redblacks’ defensive coordinator in 2023 and in each of his two seasons in that position, the team led the CFL in fewest yards allowed per rushing attempt. Two members of the Redblacks – Bryce Carter and Brandin Dandridge – were East Division all-stars in 2023.

Under Miles in 2024, the Redblacks defence tied BC for the second-most sacks in the league and featured four division all-stars in Lorenzo Mauldin IV, Michael Wakefield, Adarius Pickett and Damon Webb. Mauldin and Webb were also league all-stars.

In 2022, in between his CFL stints with Montreal and Ottawa, Miles served as defensive coordinator at Bishop’s University. The Gaiters boasted the second-stingiest defence in the Atlantic University Sport conference with an average of 15.0 points allowed per game and also ranked second in the conference with 22 sacks.

As a CFL player with Montreal and BC, Miles was a 10-time division all-star, a six-time league all-star and a two-time Grey Cup champion. He was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2018.

In college, the Roselle, N.J., product starred at the University of Nebraska and was a part of the Cornhuskers’ national-championship team in 1994.

Miles was a sixth-round draft pick by the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers in 1995 and played for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europa in 1997.
