Jackson Sombach is living out his childhood dream.
The Stampeders rookie defensive back cracked the team’s roster after a strong camp and says he couldn’t have been more excited when he got the call.
“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to play in the CFL,” he said. “To do it here in Calgary has me super excited and blessed. I was very happy for sure and thankful for everything that has come along with the journey.”
The Regina product has been watching Canadian football his whole life, his passion for the game propelling him to this next level.
“I think the competition and the brotherhood with your teammates,” he explained. “There is nothing quite like a football locker-room and being with your best friends and guys that push you to be a better person and a better football player and it’s a lot of fun, too.”
Following his second camp with the Stampeders after being drafted in the seventh round in 2024, head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson spoke about what he has liked from Sombach.
“He’s been a good story,” explained Dickenson. “Last year I even thought about bringing him back, honestly. It was just before his college season and he had a great season so we’ve liked his progress. He’s still trying to make the opening-day roster really. He’s doing some nice things, and we do believe he has talent, and he can play in our league.”

Sombach played halfback in his final year with the University of Regina Rams, but has played mostly safety so far with the Red & White.
“I’ve always kind of played inside so I feel comfortable inside,” explained Sombach. “I’ll do whatever they want of me, whatever is best for the team, and I’m just having fun, I’m having a blast out here, so I’ll do whatever they tell me.”
The regular season for Sombach and the Stampeders kicks off Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
“I’m super pumped,” he said. “It’s the start of a dream come true. You get to play in your first pro football game, I have some family coming so I’m super excited and they are super pumped up so, honestly, I’m just pumped.”
Saturday’s home opener is the Stampeders 80th birthday party featuring live entertainment, special giveaways and surprises around every corner! Plus, eight Grey Cup champions including Doug Flutie, Alex Singleton and Mark McLoughlin will be in attendance to celebrate the club’s milestone with fans! Don’t miss out!
