Hardy Cup: Who Are The Stamps Cheering For?

It’s playoff season.

And not just for the Stamps.

The University of Calgary Dinos look for a Hardy Cup three-peat Saturday, as they battle the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for top spot in the U Sports West division at McMahon Stadium starting at 1 p.m. MT.

The Dinos are undefeated on the season, boasting a 8-0 record ahead of the tilt. While the 5-3 Huskies are riding high on a recent 31-28 victory over the UBC Lions.

Can you guess who are the Stamps cheering for?

“I think it’s kind of obvious,” laughed former Dino and current Stamps receiver Richard Sindani.

“Dinos will win, easy question,” agreed fellow alum and Red & White offensive lineman Ryan Sceviour.

Just last year, the pair won the Hardy Cup with the Dinos before entering their rookie year with the Red & White – so the upcoming competition brings back plenty of fond memories.

“It actually feels like a long time ago,” Sindani reminisced.

“I came out here from the University of Regina and played junior, and eventually I came up to the Dinos. It was great experience to get further in the playoffs than I ever have before – not a shot at the rams or anything like that – it’s just nice to progress and play a big game in the West.”

For Sceviour, the Dinos’ 44-43 victory over the Thunderbirds in 2017 is one he’ll always remember.

With 16 seconds on clock, the Thunderbirds would score a touchdown to make it 43-41. But Dinos kicker Niko DiFonte answered right back with a 59-yard field goal to secure the win with just two seconds on the board.

“It’s pretty unforgettable,” Sceviour said. “Just how it ended last year, with the huge field goal by Niko that won the game. It’s one of those things you can’t really forget, being a part of that.”

Of course, both Sindani and Sceviour have been following the Dinos’ campaign closely.

And from what they’ve seen this season the home team is ready to pull out another big win.

“The Huskies are a solid team,” Sindani said. “But I’m going to with my boys at U of C. I like Adam Sinagra, Hunter Karl, and I like those two Philpot boys (Jalen and Tyson). I watched four or five of their games and they look pretty solid this year – Especially Sinagra.”

“I played with almost half of the current team,” Sceviour added. “I’m still in touch with a lot of the guys, and we hang out on weekends, so it’s great to see them doing how they’re doing – they’re 8-0.”

However, the Stamps’ Hardy Cup alliances are a mixed bag.

“You’ve got to go with the Huskies for the win,” said U of S alumni and current Stamps running back Charlie Power.

“I’ve seen a few of the games on TV, I also follow along on Twitter and stuff. They’re putting together a good year, and had a big win last week. I think they’ll carry the momentum and get an upset here.”

Red & White receiver Julan Lynch is also hopeful his former Huskies squad will come out on top.

“It’s their first time playing in the Hardy Cup since 2009, so things are looking up,” Lynch said. “I’m excited for them – definitely and I’ll be here watching them and cheering them on.”

He’s not the only one.

“We’ll see how the weather goes, but I might go with Julan,” said Sindani.

“If it’s cold, I’ll sneak up to the press box. But I’ll definitely be there watching,” Sceviour echoed.
