The 103rd Grey Cup playoffs kick off this weekend as the Stamps host the BC Lions in the Western Semi-Final. The Stamps (14-4) finished second in the West while the BC Lions (7-11) took third. The two teams met twice this season with the Stampeders coming out victorious in both games. The winner of today’s matchup will head to Edmonton to take on the Eskimos in the Western Final next Sunday.

Starting at 11:30 a.m, the Calgary Grey Cup Committee will be serving up a free pancake breakfast in the east parking lot, across from the Stamps Store and Ticket Office.

That will be followed by other pre-game festivities and CFL partner attractions including sampling of Dr. Oetker Deluxe pizzas, photos with the Grey Cup, the Mark’s Obstacle Course and the Shaw photo booth.

Fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used clothing to Sun Life Financial’s clothing bin in the Fan Zone to support the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Clothesline initiative. In exchange for a donation, fans will have the chance to win 2016 Stampeders Season Tickets.

Stan Schwartz Heart of a Champion Awards

The Calgary Stampeder Football Club is proud to announce the winners of the 2015 Stan Schwartz Heart of a Champion Awards.

The awards are presented annually to high school senior football players throughout the city of Calgary. The Stan Schwartz Heart of a Champion Awards recognize players who have made significant contributions on and off the field to their team, school and community and have shown perseverance.

The 2015 recipients are:

  • Division I – Kelton Bailey, Henry Wisewood
  • Division II/III – Liam Nightengale, Western Canada
  • Division II/III – Colin Ferronato, Robert Thirsk High School

This year’s recipients will be honoured at halftime of Sunday’s Western Semi-Final contest between the Stampeders and BC Lions at McMahon Stadium.

Stan Schwartz, Executive Vice-President of the Calgary Stampeder Football Club, will present the three recipients with a plaque commemorating their achievements as well as a trophy for their school to display until next season.

Here is more information on this year’s recipients:

Kelton Bailey – Henry Wise Wood

  • Plays quarterback and receiver
  • Strong commitment on and off the field, including moving away from his family to advance his education and athletics within the Calgary football program
  • Has received full athletic scholarship offers from several CIS universities and has been a part of U of C and Eastern Washington summer football camps
  • Dedicated time to CAMFA Wildcats and coaches peewee football

Liam Nightengale – Western Canada

  • Plays tight end
  • Described as a natural leader on and off the field by coaches and peers
  • Outstanding member of the student union and commits time to planning events and giving back to the community
  • Member of his high school’s student leadership group and helps undertake school athletic awareness activities
  • Has dedicated time to the Terry Fox Run and several team-building activities

Colin Ferronato – Robert Thirsk High School

  • Plays defence and special teams
  • A team captain
  • Helped lead his team to the Div. 2 city championships this year and was team’s leading tackler
  • Mentors young athletes on and off the field and is constantly promoting the values of football in the school community
  • Volunteers with the Calgary Youth Foundation, Youth Volunteer Corps, Aim High Youth Football camps, Ronald McDonald house and organizations the address homelessness in Calgary
