Stamps West Division all-stars

By Stampeders.com Staff

A total of eight Stampeders players covering all three phases of the game — offence, defence and special teams — have been named to the West Division all-star team.

Defensive end Charleston Hughes, who picks up the fourth honour of his career, kicker Rene Paredes (third) and running back Jerome Messam (second) are familiar faces on the West Division all-star team while quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, receiver Eric Rogers, centre Pierre Lavertu, guard Spencer Wilson and safety Joshua Bell are all first-time all-stars.

The division all-stars are determined by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) as well as one ballot from each team’s coaching staff.

Here is a closer look at the Stampeders’ all-stars:

Bo Levi Mitchell: Mitchell started 17 games and led the Stamps to 13 victories, the highest win total of any CFL quarterback. He was first in the West Division in completions (364), passing yards (4,551), touchdowns (26) and QB rating (96.8). Mitchell had six 300-yard passing games in 2015 and eight games with multiple touchdown passes. In addition to his passing accomplishments, Mitchell had 19 carries for 88 yards and three touchdowns.

Jerome Messam: Messam, who joined the Stamps in a deadline-day deal with Saskatchewan, was one just three 1,000-yard rushers in the CFL this season and his average of 6.2 yards per carry was tops among all running backs. He had 1,006 yards and two touchdowns on 163 carries and added career highs of 47 receptions for 464 yards. Messam had two 100-yard rushing games — including one in his Stamps debut on Oct. 31 — and was second in the CFL with 1,503 yards from scrimmage.

Eric Rogers: After bursting onto the scene in 2014 with two productive regular-season games and a great playoff performance, Rogers followed with a spectacular 2015 campaign as he led the CFL with 1,448 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches. He was also tops with 13 catches of 30 yards or more and was among the leaders in receptions (87), yards after catch (399) and second-down conversions (28). Consistency was the hallmark of Rogers’ play in 2015 as he made at least four catches in 15 of the 17 games he played and had at least 60 yards on 15 occasions including five 100-yard games.

Spencer Wilson and Pierre Lavertu: Wilson and Lavertu were the only two offensive linemen who played all 18 games for the Stamps and they served key roles on a unit that allowed a league-low 33 sacks in 2015. In his first year as a starter, Lavertu excelled at the all-important centre position while the versatile Wilson made 17 starts including nine at right guard, six at right tackle and two at left tackle. The duo helped pave the way for three different tailbacks — Jon Cornish, Matt Walter and Jerome Messam – to record 100-yard games this season.

Charleston Hughes: Despite missing three games with injuries, the veteran defensive lineman reached double digits in sacks for the third time in his career. He finished the season with 10 sacks — bringing his career total to 72 — and added 39 tackles, including three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two knockdowns. He was named a CFL player of the week after his three-sack performance in the Labour Day Classic victory over the Edmonton Eskimos.

Joshua Bell: Bell was a fixture in the middle of the Stamps’ secondary, starting all 18 games including 17 at safety and helping the Calgary defence lead the CFL in fewest points allowed with 290 and fewest touchdown passes allowed with 22. Bell recorded 47 tackles, including two tackles for loss, one interception, four knockdowns and one fumble recovery.

Rene Paredes: Paredes led the West Division with 152 points and 41 field goals. His kicks were highlighted by three game-winning field goals including two, both against Hamilton, on the final play of the contest. Paredes was 41 of 47 on field goals (87.2 per cent) including 13 of 16 from 40 yards out or longer. The Concordia alum led the West Division with a 64.9-yard average on kickoffs and had four kickoff singles as well as 26 converts.
