About last night . . .

Here’s a closer look at Saturday’s loss against the Edmonton Eskimos as the Alberta teams now both find themselves with 11-4 records:

Alberta advantage

For almost three full decades, the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos co-existed without ever hanging out together at the top of their division.

From 1949 — the year the Eskimos first went into business — to 1977, not once did the Alberta rivals finish in the top two spots in West. The Stamps and Esks have certainly been making up for it ever since.

With three games remaining in each squad’s 2015 regular-season schedule, the foes are both 11-4 and as of Saturday have secured first and second place in the West Division, with order of finish to be determined.

It’s the second year in a row and the 16th time since 1978 the clubs have finished 1-2 in their division. The majority of the Alberta domination came during a 13-year stretch from 1989 to 2001 when the Stamps and Eskimos were the best in West on no fewer than 12 occasions.

In the 38 years from 1978-2015, the second-most-frequent combination of teams at the top of the division has been Edmonton and Winnipeg (five times). Then there’s Calgary-BC, Calgary-Saskatchewan and Edmonton-BC with four apiece.

There are two sets of West teams that have never occupied the top spots in the division together since 1978 — Saskatchewan-Winnipeg and Calgary-Winnipeg, although it’s worth noting the Blue Bombers spent a total of 21 years in the East over that period.

4,000 for 19

Bo Levi Mitchell on Saturday became just the ninth quarterback in Stampeders history to throw for 4,000 yards in a season.

Mitchell joins a group that includes Peter Liske, Rick Johnson, Doug Flutie, Jeff Garcia, Dave Dickenson, Marcus Crandell, Henry Burris and Kevin Glenn.

Mitchell is on pace for 4,846 passing yards, a total that in Stamps history has only been surpassed by Flutie and Burris.
