Not only did Greg Wilson experience his first Labour Day Classic on Monday afternoon, the rookie wideout also registered his first career touchdown in Calgary’s 16-7 win over the Eskimos.
Finishing the day with three receptions for 26 yards along with the major score, Wilson was looking forward to finally taking the field for the annual Battle of Alberta on Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Night at a sold-out McMahon Stadium.
“It was exciting, it was a lot of fun,” said Wilson on partaking in the long-standing rivalry. “With the jets flying over and the stands packed and rocking, it was a lot of fun. We came out with a ‘W’ and (it was) a good team win, as well.”
The Fordham University product’s TD score came on a 10-yard pass from Bo Levi Mitchell with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Both teams failed to find the end zone apart from Wilson’s sliding snag.
“I can’t thank Bo and the O-line enough,” the soon-to-be 25-year-old explained. “The O-line blocked the play up well and Bo threw a great ball. Really, for me, it was just doing my job and just catching the ball when it was thrown to me.”
The off-season free-agent signee was also awarded a game ball in the midst of the locker-room festivities following the victory.
Suiting up in only his third CFL contest, the Danville, Calif., native gradually became more and more comfortable once integrated into the Red and White offensive attack.
“I always believe in myself, “ offered No. 84. “Any game that you get reps in and get to play in, it builds your confidence and you can just build on that going into the next week.”
Listed at six-foot-two and 205 lbs., Wilson has already begun to shift his focus towards Saturday’s rematch up north at Commonwealth Stadium. The Stampeders now sit atop the West with an 8-2 mark.
“It’s just going to be another dogfight,” said the receiver. “This game was a dogfight and it will be the same thing next week. It will be a long, 60-minute game. When we get opportunities to make plays, we’re going to have to make them, and hopefully we’ll get another ‘W’.”
