The Stampeders extended a number of winning streaks on Monday at McMahon Stadium as they defeated the Edmonton Eskimos 16-7 in the Labour Day Classic.

The win was Calgary’s fifth in a row as the Stamps improved their CFL-best record to 8-2.

The Stamps have also won four straight Labour Day Classics against their rivals from the north and have now won 12 regular-season meetings in a row against Edmonton.

For a second consecutive game, the Stamps did not yield a touchdown and Calgary has held the opposition to single digits in three of the past four contests.

Monday’s contest was the lowest-scoring Labour Day Classic since the Stamps beat Toronto 13-8 in 1966 and the lowest Labour Day point total against Edmonton since 1961 when the Eskimos won 10-9.

“I won’t say it was routine, but it was a very well-deserved win,” said Stamps head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “The game went like I expected — two very good defences and (it was going to be a matter of) who had the opportunity to make a play or two more and we made some plays in the first half to get us a touchdown.”

The Stamps opened the scoring on a 13-yard Rene Paredes field goal a little more than two minutes into the contest and never trailed the rest of the way.

After the Eskimos got on the scoreboard with a 57-yard Sean Whyte punt single, the Stamps produced the only touchdown of as Bo Levi Mitchell connected with rookie Greg Wilson on a 10-yard scoring pass. Mitchell completed five consecutive passes on the scoring drive including a 46-yarder to Jeff Fuller that moved the ball deep into Eskimos territory.

Paredes’ 32-yard field goal on the final play of the half gave Calgary a 13-1 edge at the break.

The field-goal kickers accounted for all the second-half scoring as Whyte connected from 23 and 18 yards to get the Eskimos to within six points but Paredes found the range on a 45-yarder with 1:15 remaining to seal the victory.

Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly, sidelined since Week 1 with a knee injury, entered the game in the second half but managed to complete only five of his 12 throws.

The same teams hook up again Saturday in Edmonton in the traditional Labour Day rematch. Kickoff at Commonwealth Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
