It’s time once again for one of the highlights of the Canadian Football League season — the Labour Day Classic, presented by Jayman BUILT.
One of the great CFL traditions is the annual meeting at McMahon Stadium between the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos — this marks the 50th time the rivals have met on this day — and there’s added intrigue to this year’s matchup as first place in the West Division is on the line.
The Stamps lead the division with a 7-2 record while the Eskimos are in second place at 6-3. Kickoff for Monday’s contest is at 2:30 p.m.
This is the 60th game the Stamps will play at home on Labour Day and Calgary holds an all-time record of 33-25-1 on the first Monday in September. Early in their history, the Stamps played a variety of opponents on Labour Day but since 1982 the day has been reserved for an inter-provincial battle with the Eskimos.
The Eskimos lead the Labour Day series 25-23-1 but the Stamps have won five of the six most recent meetings and six of the past eight.
Calgary carries a four-game winning streak into this year’s matchup including a 36-8 road victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday. The Stamps have also won five in a row at McMahon to open the season.
The Eskimos are 6-3 after a 38-15 home-field win over the Toronto Argonauts last week and they sport a 2-2 road record.
It’s a battle of the irresistible force against the immovable object as Calgary leads the West with 255 points scored — including at least 34 in each of their past three games — while the Eskimos are the CFL’s stingiest team with 165 points allowed.
It’s the first of a back-to-back set for the old rivals as the Stamps will head up north five days after the Labour Day Classic to face the Eskimos in a rematch at Commonwealth Stadium.
