About last night …

Here’s a closer look at the Stampeders’ 48-3 home win over the Ottawa RedBlacks at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.

Coming back strong

The combination of rest, recuperation and extra preparation time has served the Stampeders well in recent years.

Since John Hufnagel took over as Calgary’s head coach and general manager in 2008, the Stamps are 9-0 coming off a bye week. The past five victories after a break have come by a double-digit point difference.

Spreading the wealth

Despite Saturday’s big performance all around, it wasn’t easy picking out individual stars and that was reflected in the presentation of the game balls following the contest.

On the defensive side, captain Juwan Simpson didn’t bother trying to sort things out and instead presented the game ball to defensive coordinator Rich Stubler. Offensive captain Rob Cote was faced with a similar dilemma and simply honoured the entire receiving corps.

Not sure who to actually flip the ball to, Cote tossed it in Eric Rogers’ general direction and Rogers tried to tap it over to Marquay McDaniel who playfully knocked it back towards Rogers.

Five different Stamps receivers had at least two catches led by Rogers’ five grabs for 92 yards. Rogers and Joe West each had a touchdown while running back Tory Harrison made three catches including one for a two-point conversion.

On defence, five different players had a sack and a dozen players recorded at least one tackle.

Historic result

After four wins this season by a combined 10 points, the Stamps gave themselves — and their fans — some breathing room on Saturday.

The margin of victory against Ottawa — 45 — was the sixth-largest in franchise history and the biggest since a 47-point win over Edmonton in the 2010 Labour Day Classic.

Calgary recorded its biggest point total since a 55-24 victory over Hamilton on Oct. 29, 2010. And held an opponent to three points for the first time since a Sept. 14, 2012, win against Winnipeg.

In case you missed it . . .
