Here’s a closer look at the Stampeders’ 25-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Through six games of the season, the team scoring first in games involving the Stampeders has won just once.
For the fourth time in as many home games, the Stamps put themselves into an early hole before rallying for a victory. The past two wins have featured the erasing of a double-digit deficit — 16 points against Winnipeg in Week 4 and 17 points against Montreal on Saturday.
A year ago, the Stamps won three games in which they trailed after one quarter. This season, they already have four such victories.
Strangely, the Stamps’ best start season was an 11-0 jump against Ottawa in Week 5 and Calgary wound up losing that game in overtime.
Jon Cornish’s body of work — including three consecutive Most Outstanding Canadian awards and three straight rushing titles — speaks for itself and the Stamps would obviously much rather have him in the lineup than watching from the sidelines with his thumb in a cast and his arm in a sling.
Having said that, the Stamps have shown a remarkable ability to cope on those occasions No. 9 isn’t able to play. During the 2014 season, the Stamps were 7-2 in the games Cornish was sidelined and on Saturday they again managed to prevail despite the absence of their talented tailback.
Matt Walter got much of the early work with 40 yards on eight carries including an impressive 14-yard dash. When cramps kept Walter out of action in the second half, Tory Harrison stepped in and ran for 47 yards while adding four catches for 23 yards in his CFL debut.
Everyone — the fans, the players, the coaches — feels better about a bye week after coming a victory and there have been a fair number of happy mid-season breaks recently in Calgary.
Saturday’s win was the Stamps’ seventh in nine games prior to a bye since John Hufnagel took over as head coach and general manager in 2008. The only exceptions are a 38-35 loss in Edmonton in 2009 and a 34-8 setback against BC in 2012.
Calgary has been even better on the other side of the bye, posting an impeccable 8-0 mark during that period.
