The Calgary Stampeders overcame a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to post a 25-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday at McMahon Stadium.

The win is the Stamps’ fourth in a row at home and leaves the Red and White at 4-2 heading into its bye week.

Saturday’s contest was reminiscent of a June 13, 2013, home game against the Als as Calgary climbed out of a 24-0 hole on that occasion.

“They have done it before so there was some history there,” noted Stamps head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “They know that when they do get behind by that amount of points, that you can go one of two ways (and they choose to) go try and make a play.

“If you make a play, a lot of good things can happen after making one single play and that’s what occurred. We got back in the game and it was a great win.”

Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Stamps while Marquay McDaniel had seven catches for 126 yards and his first two majors of the season.

“They had great games,” said Hufnagel of Mitchell and McDaniel. “I thought our receivers played, as a group, played probably their best game (of the season).”

McDaniel’s first score came on a one-yard throw from short-yardage quarterback Drew Tate and put the Stamps on the scoreboard after a slow start. The veteran slotback’s second touchdown was a 42-yard pass-and-run play from Mitchell in the third quarter and gave Calgary its first lead of the game.

The Stamps did not allow any points in the second half until a designed play at the end of the game when Mitchell threw the ball back into the end zone for Jeff Fuller, who ran off the final few seconds of the contest.

“Truthfully, (the Alouettes) had the one long pass and then they had a punt return for a touchdown,” said Hufnagel. “The defence played well, but truthfully I’m tired of the long gains for touchdowns. We’ve got to get that out of our playbook.”

Calgary trailed 17-0 after 15 minutes as the visitors scored on a 38-yard Boris Bede field goal, a 51-yard touchdown pass from Rakeem Cato to S.J. Green and a 74-yard punt-return score by Stefan Logan.

The Stamps scored 17 points of their own in the second quarter on McDaniel’s first touchdown, a 34-yard TD reception by Eric Rogers — his fifth score of the season — and a 27-yard Rene Paredes field goal.

Bede’s second field goal of the game was the difference at halftime as the Alouettes led 20-17.

A key moment came in the third quarter when the Alouettes were marching towards points until Fred Bennett forced Dobson Collins to fumble the ball deep in Stamps territory after a long catch-and-run, with fellow defensive back Jamar Wall recovering at the two-yard line.

The Stamps return to action after the bye on Saturday, Aug. 15 when they take on the Ottawa RedBlacks. Kickoff at McMahon Stadium is at 8 p.m.
