Here’s a closer look at the Stampeders’ 29-26 overtime loss in Ottawa on Friday night.
It’s starting to sound like a broken record but Stamps games continue to be very tight. Friday’s contest was the fourth of Calgary’s five games so far this season decided by less than a touchdown and it was the first close game that didn’t go the Red and White’s way.
It’s part of a pattern across the league through the first month of the 2015 season as 12 of 18 games heading into Saturday were decided by fewer than seven points including eight with a difference of a field goal or less.
It’s been a back-and-forth battle for the edge in the interdivisional play.
The West took the first matchup against the East when Calgary knocked off Hamilton in Week 1 but then the East rattled off five consecutive victories including a Week 2 sweep.
Then the West counter-punched with four straight wins and then the East won both of Friday’s interdivisional contests.
Add it all up and you have a 7-5 advantage for the East Division.
Heading into Saturday’s action, Stamps slotback Eric Rogers leads the CFL with four receiving touchdowns and is second in the league with 400 receiving yards.
Rogers has scored six touchdowns in seven career regular-season games and has cracked the 100-yard mark in two of the past three contests.
Rogers also had two scores in the Stamps’ 2014 Western Final victory over the Edmonton Eskimos.
The Stamps are a perfect six-for-six so far this season when going for the two-point conversion after a touchdown.
Marquay McDaniel has developed into a bit of a two-point specialist for the Stamps as four of the six conversions have come on his catches including a pair on Friday in Ottawa.
Calgary’s other two-pointers have been provided by Eric Rogers and Jon Cornish.
