After sitting out last week’s matchup in Montreal, both Juwan Simpson and Jeff Fuller fully expect to assume their starting roles against the 2-0 Argos on Monday night.
Simpson, an all-star middle linebacker who registered three tackles in the season-opener before a leg injury in the second half, struggled with his inability to contribute to the Stamps’ defensive efforts against the Als.
“It was hard to sit and watch, regardless of a win or loss,” the Alabama alum offered. “It’s hard to see your guys out there playing knowing what they’re going through and you can’t do anything to help. But today is a new day and we’ll leave that (defeat) where it is and we’re looking forward to Toronto.”
The 29-11 setback saw Calgary surrender nearly 400 yards of total offence, a statistic Simpson would have loved to help limit.
“I wish I was there,” exclaimed the eight-year veteran on the occasion of his 31st birthday. “It’s as simple as that. Who’s to say I would have made any difference? I don’t know. But I hate not being with those guys. It was the first game I’ve missed in quite some time so it was tough on me. But I feel fresh now, rejuvenated. Like I’m 25 again.”
As for Fuller, a recurring knee ailment prevented the six-foot-four wideout from being named to the 44-man roster on game day despite making the trip east.
“It was a tough decision, and obviously this early in the season, it’s not fun to take games off,” explained the Palo Alto, Calif., native. “I’ll just come back strong for this Toronto game and get a full week of preparation.”
Named a CFL top performer in Week 1 with 148 yards on nine catches including a pair of highlight-reel grabs, Fuller has complete confidence in the rest of the receiving corps whenever he is out of the lineup.
“We had great receivers out there already in Quay (Marquay McDaniel) and Eric (Rogers) – it’s a shame he went down that game – but I feel like all the receivers are capable of making big plays,” No. 3 explained. “I’m just looking forward to getting back out there and contributing.”
The Texas A&M product does not expect any future setbacks as he rejoins the offensive unit.
“I don’t think I will be sore or anything tomorrow after sitting out as opposed to if I had played,” indicated Fuller. “I felt like it would have been more of an uphill battle. Obviously going through the week, I can build my confidence and get my timing right with Bo (Levi Mitchell).”
Simpson, meanwhile, was not only seen by his teammates on the practice field Wednesday, but heard loud and clear, as well.
“It’s not a conscious effort,” the defensive captain said of his customary vocal presence. “For me, it’s just what I do. They gave me a hard time about missing (last week) so I had to let them know I was back on the field.”
