About last night…

Stampeders.com Staff

Here’s another look at the Stamps’ 37-29 pre-season comeback victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night at Mosaic Stadium.

Finishing strong

The Stamps scored 21 fourth-quarter points against the Roughriders to overcome a 26-16 deficit and complete the pre-season schedule with a 2-0 mark.

The 37 points matched the best production by any CFL club during this year’s tune-ups and was the highest total by a Calgary since the Stamps beat the Edmonton Eskimos by a 37-22 count on June 24, 2011.

Calgary was one of three teams to go 2-0 during the 2015 pre-season and, as luck would have it, one of the others will be the Stamps’ opponent during Week 1 of the regular season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Ticats also concluded pre-season play on Friday as they topped the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 26-15. Zach Collaros was sharp for Hamilton as he completed 14 of 17 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown before giving way to backup Jeremiah Masoli.

The rematch of the 2014 Grey Cup participants takes place at McMahon Stadium on Friday with the action kicking off at 7 p.m.

Tate was great

After sitting out the first game-and-a-half of the pre-season to allow the other quarterbacks to get a look from the coaches, Drew Tate finally got a chance to play and he made the most of the opportunity as he threw for 175 yards and a touchdown to spark the Calgary rally.

The nine-year veteran completed 12 of 17 passes — including four to Lemar Durant and three to Greg Wilson — but one of the most impressive plays by Tate may have been an incompletion. With the Stamps down by six points and with a first down at the Saskatchewan 22, Tate dropped back to pass and faced immediate pressure. The Riders got to the Calgary quarterback, but Tate shook off the would-be sack, scrambled out of traffic and heaved the ball out of bounds.

The saved yardage paid off on the next play as Tate hooked up with Tory Harrison for a 13-yard completion and a fresh set of downs. Two plays later, Tate found Kamar Jorden in the end zone for the tying touchdown, which became a one-point Stamps lead after the extra point.

Improved discipline

A frequent issue in pre-season play is the frequency of flags as new players to the CFL get accustomed to the rules and the returning vets get back in the swing of things.

Calgary got off to a rocky start in the discipline department by taking 14 penalties in the pre-season opener against BC and seven in the first half of Friday’s contest in Regina. The good news is the Stamps seemed to figure things out after the halftime break as the Red and White was called for a single infraction in the second half.

“We’re going in the right direction,” noted head coach and general manager John Hufnagel.

Huff’s dozen

Huff is entering his final season as head man, so that means he’s coached his last pre-season contest. He finishes with a 12-4 record in tune-up tilts.

Here are the combined CFL pre-season standings since the start of the 2008 season:

Cgy (12-4)
Tor (11-4-1)
Ham (10-6)
BC  (9-7)
Edm (8-8)
Mtl (5-10-1)
Wpg (5-11)
Ssk (4-12)
Ott (1-3)*
