About last night

Here’s another look at the Stamps’ 20-6 pre-season victory over the BC Lions on Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

Can’t tell the players without a program

A pre-season opener at home with training-camp rosters still at the maximum limit results in quite a sight — a sea of red-helmeted players on the west sideline at McMahon Stadium.

While 44 players normally suit up for a regular-season contest, no fewer than 75 campers were in uniform for the Stamps on Friday. That resulted in a lot of pass-and-catch combinations as four quarterbacks hooked up with 15 different receivers over the course of the evening.

There were a total of 18 different quarterback-receiver combinations on completed passes Friday with the most frequent partnership being between Dominique Davis and Greg Wilson, who hooked up three times including the game’s only touchdown.

Here is the full list of combos:

3 — Dominique Davis to Greg Wilson
2 — Bryant Moniz to Marquay McDaniel
2 — Moniz to Eric Rogers
2 —Davis to Tory Harrison
2 — Andrew Buckley to Lemar Durant
2 — Buckley to Cory Mitchell
1 — Bo Levi Mitchell to Rob Cote
1 — Mitchell to Jock Sanders
1 — Mitchell to McDaniel
1 — Moniz to Dan Buckner
1 —Davis to Kamar Jorden
1 — Davis to Derrick Joseph
1 — Davis to Sederrik Cunningham
1 — Davis to Charlie Power
1 — Buckley to Nathan Slaughter
1 — Buckley to Buckner
1 — Buckley to Keith Toston
1 — Buckley to Power

In keeping with the theme of spreading the wealth, eight different Stamps had carries, led by Keith Toston’s 40 rushing yards, 14 players had at least one tackle and five players recorded a sack.

Preparing to succeed

The Stamps have the best record in the CFL since John Hufnagel took over in 2008 and it may or may not be a coincidence that Calgary has more pre-season victories than any other club during that time.

Player evaluation may be the most important factor in a dress-rehearsal game but it doesn’t hurt to get a taste of success in the process. Calgary is 11-4 in pre-season play over the past eight years.

Here are the pre-season standings since 2008 going into Saturday’s action:

Cgy (11-4)
Tor (10-4-1)
BC  (9-6)
Ham (9-6)
Edm (6-8)
Wpg (5-10)
Mtl (4-9-1)
Ssk (4-10)
Ott (1-2)*
