Davis shines in Stamps debut

First-year quarterback Dominique Davis had an impressive outing in Friday night’s 20-6 preseason win over the BC Lions, completing nine of his 10 pass attempts to go along with one touchdown toss.

Brand new to the CFL game, the East Carolina product was glad to go up against an opposing team rather than the Stampeders’ defence day after day in training camp.

“It was one thing doing it in practice every day but when the bullets are flying and it’s actually live, it’s different,” said Davis post-game. “But I just took it one play at a time to get first downs and touchdowns, and that’s what we did today.”

Davis conceded he was anxious to get under centre as he was the third quarterback off the bench, but felt cool, calm and collected once entering the action.

“As a football player I feel like you should always have some type of nerves in you, but once you get that first hit or that first pass, it all goes away and then you’re able to play the way you want to.”

Severe weather conditions took McMahon Stadium by storm prior to kickoff, but the hail and rain eventually subsided prior to halftime. The former NFL backup was not going to let the dark skies dampen his spirits.

“As a football player you have to (be able to) play in any condition, so whatever happens out there you just have to get the win,” Davis stated emphatically.

Less than four minutes into the fourth quarter, the Lakeland, Fla., native rolled to his right and floated the ball downfield to wideout Greg Wilson in one-on-one coverage for the game’s only major score. As Davis explained following the triumph, the 24-yard TD was a long time coming.

“We go way back, all the way since Tampa in mini-camp and we’ve had a connection for a while now,” No. 15. said of his chemistry with Wilson. “I must admit it was kind of a bad throw, but he made up for it and he got the touchdown for us.”

Throwing for 75 yards in the contest, more than any of Calgary’s other three pivots that saw action in the victory, Davis knows he must continue to make great strides in order to stick with the Stamps.

“I felt like I did a lot of good things but there was a lot of mistakes out there I made that I need to get corrected to get ready for next week.”
