Failing to plan, says the old saying, is planning to fail.
That definitely applies to the Canadian Football League draft, which helps explain why coaches, general managers and scouts spend hours upon hours reviewing game film, conducting interviews and making lists.
The latest example of the importance of the draft came in the Calgary Stampeders’ 2014 Grey Cup victory as no fewer than 14 of the Red and White’s draft picks were in uniform that glorious day at Vancouver’s BC Place.
Calgary goes into the 2015 season with 28 products of the CFL draft including 20 of their own picks.
The group includes members of the Class of 2014 — including first overall selection Pierre Lavertu — as well as Randy Chevrier, who was chosen fifth overall by Edmonton all the way back in 2001, when Lavertu was just 10 years old.
In between there’s 2006 draft pick Jon Cornish, the three-time Most Outstanding Canadian who somehow lasted to the second round in a year the Stamps didn’t own a first-round pick.
Coincidentally, one of the players who was selected in the opening round of the 2006 draft did wind up with the Red and White as Dan Federkeil, drafted by Toronto, was acquired in a 2013 trade. The move paid off handsomely as the Calgary Dinos alum was a starter on the Stamps’ stellar offensive line the past two seasons.
Here is a complete list of where and when current members of the Stamps roster were drafted (all picks by Calgary unless otherwise indicated):
2014 — Pierre Lavertu (1st round, 1st overall), Quinn Smith (1st round, 7th overall), Max Caron (2nd round, 16th overall), Adam Thibault (third round, 24th overall), Derek Wiggan (fourth round, 34th overall), Tyler Crapigna (5th round, 40th overall)
