Getting to know… Quinn Smith

David Moll

By Stampeders.com Staff

Quinn Smith was selected by the Stampeders in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2014 CFL Draft and played his first game on June 28 that year.

He recorded his first tackle on July 12 against Toronto and his first sack on Sept. 27 against BC. He was named the CFL’s Canadian player of the week when he recorded three sacks in the final regular season game.

Smith played on both the offensive and defensive line at Concordia where he totalled 68.5 tackles and 13.5 sacks.

We asked Quinn to finish the following sentences with the first thing that came to his mind.

Getting drafted in the first round… at my house it was a big party. Everyone was so happy. It was funny because everyone was cheering and cheering but my nephew started crying because he was hoping I’d get drafted by Toronto. He was crying because I had to go all the way out to Calgary. It was pretty sad to see him crying like that but it was a pretty exciting time. We were watching on TSN and then Coach Claybrooks called me and it was a pretty exciting moment.

I will never… swim in the ocean because I am scared of sharks.

I have always wanted to… I am a big rock and roll fan, I’ve always wanted to see either – I know they’re not together anymore — someone from the Beatles or Led Zeppelin live because I play guitar and they’re a really big influence on me playing guitar. Just to see Jimmy Page, Robert Plant live or Paul McCartney or Ringo… that would be something crazy.

I own a lot of… video games. Ever since I was a little kid, so I have a pretty big collection of video games. And I usually own a lot of food but it gets eaten.

Playing at Concordia was… some of the greatest years of my life. We didn’t win a whole lot games there and we didn’t get to play a lot of playoff games but I made some of my best friends there and had some of the best times there and I’d recommend that school to anyone to go to because it’s a really great place.

The last thing I ate was… a chocolate Gatorade shake from (Head Athletic Therapist) Mike (Gudmundson)’s fridge. I stole it from him.

My first CFL season was… one to remember. I was talking about this with my brother… I almost feel a little spoiled. I got to be a part of one of the greatest teams in history. That feeling of greatness is still there and we just want to continue it going. But this first season was… the excitement still rings a bell in your head.

The last vacation I took… I‘ve never really been outside of the country so I don’t really know if I’ve ever really been on a vacation. I guess I’d say maybe Vancouver when we won the Grey Cup. That seemed like a vacation after we won. Or Christmas break in Toronto I guess.

Playing on both the offensive and defensive line in college was… exhausting. I mean not coming off the field on offence or defence for the whole game… I couldn’t walk any time I did that. It was obviously great to have on film to show the CFL teams I could play both ways but in terms of being exhausted I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. You can’t walk for three days after playing that.

Championships… 2014 Calgary Stampeders!
