Kahlil Carter joined the Stampeders on Wednesday as the defensive backs coach and is making his return to the CFL after playing defensive back for four seasons with Toronto and Montreal. He started in the 2008 Grey Cup for the Alouettes and recorded eight tackles in a losing effort to the Stampeders.
He also played for eight different teams over a 10-year period in the Arena Football League. He had his No. 9 jersey retired by the AF2’s Arkansas Twisters in 2007.
Since retiring as a player in 2010, Kahlil’s been coaching at various levels and leagues including arena football, high school, college and the professional ranks.
Carter grew up in Little Rock, Ark. Where he graduated from Central High School. He played the first three years of his collegiate career at the University of Arkansas before transferring to Southern Arkansas for his senior season.
He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in French.
To get to know him a little bit better, we asked Coach Carter to finish the following sentences with the first thing that came to his mind.
There is no way I would ever… skydive, bungee jump or do anything that was unnecessarily injurious.
The last time I laughed out loud was… today during the meeting. I really enjoy the staff, especially on defence, and I’m looking forward to having a good time with those guys.
I have always wanted to… fly a plane. I’ve wanted to take some pilot lessons and be in control of the aircraft and see how I do with that.
I own a lot of… Kahlil Carter memorabilia from my playing days. I keep it everywhere… in my garage, some are on the walls in my house. My wife hates that.
The last thing I bought online was… probably a couple pair of Cole Haan shoes. They’re really comfortable and they look nice.
The last compliment I got was… somebody told me in the airport coming here that I look like Tiger Woods. I kind of see that, but I kind of don’t.
My first CFL game was… ’05 against the former Ottawa Renegades. I had an interception and the referee took it away from me.
Defensive backs are… players who play the most difficult position on the field other than the quarterback.
The most famous person in my cell phone is… Damon Allen. He’s a good friend of mine and one of the best quarterbacks in the league’s history.
I learned lately that… life’s all about relationships and the people that you meet. Not about statistics or awards. Gotta keep those bridges intact.
