Oregon or Ohio State in Monday night’s U.S. college football national championship game?
The answer depends on whom in the Stampeders organization you’re asking.
Veteran Calgary defensive coordinator Rich Stubler, for instance, served as Oregon’s DC in 1996 and 1997. One of the graduate assistants on the Ducks staff at that time was Mark Helfrich, who is now Oregon’s head coach. (Another graduate assistant at that time was Rick Campbell, who later became the Stamps’ defensive coordinator and is now head man with the Ottawa RedBlacks).
On the other side of the coin, alumni association president Srecko Zizakovic is a graduate of THEE Ohio State University.
Zizakovic was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes and was part of a Big 10 championship team in 1986. After graduation, he played six seasons on the defensive line for the Stampeders.
During Zizakovic’s time with the Buckeyes, one of the graduate assistants was Urban Meyer, now Ohio State’s head coach.
“With a coach of Urban Meyer’s pedigree on the sidelines making the calls,” said Zizakovic, “I think we’ve got a good chance. If they win the battle in the trenches, I think Ohio State will prevail.”
Ken-Yon Rambo, who was a star receiver for the Stamps for seven seasons and a member of the 2008 Grey Cup championship team, is another prominent Ohio State grad among the Stamps’ alumni.
