Simon says he’s staying

Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the re-signing of national receiver Simon Charbonneau-Campeau. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Chabonneau-Campeau, who had been eligible to become a free agent in February, played his first season with the Stampeders in 2014 after being acquired in a trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Jan. 6, 2014.

The 26-year-old St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., native played 14 regular-season games for Calgary and established career highs with 13 catches for 233 yards for an average of 17.9 yards per reception. He scored his first career touchdown during a Sept. 6 contest against Edmonton. Charbonneau-Campeau added two catches for 74 yards in the Western Final and one catch for 28 yards in the Grey Cup game.

The Universite de Sherbrooke product also saw extensive duty on special teams for Calgary and made seven tackles.

“I’m pleased that Simon has chosen to remain with the Stampeders,” said Hufnagel. “He was an excellent addition to the team in 2014 as he made some very important catches and was a great asset on special teams. I look forward to his continued development in his second season with us.”

Charbonneau-Campeau played two seasons with the Tiger-Cats before joining the Stamps. In 41 career games, he has 22 catches for 348 yards and one touchdown.

“I’m very happy to be staying in Calgary,” said Charbonneau-Campeau. “The Stampeders showed tremendous faith in me a year ago when they acquired me from Hamilton and I found myself in a great situation. I was very comfortable with the coaching staff and my teammates and the Grey Cup capped off a very memorable first season. I’m looking forward to the new season and the opportunity to build on the success of 2014.”
