Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce the re-signing of international defensive back Brandon Smith. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Smith, who had been eligible to become a free agent in February, has been with the Stampeders since 2008. He played all 18 games in the 2014 regular season and led the team with 85 tackles, which ranked third in the CFL. He added three tackles for a loss of four yards, a sack, two interceptions for 26 yards, one knockdown, three forced fumbles and two special-teams tackles on his way to being named a CFL all-star. Smith had a season high of 10 tackles on Sept. 13 against Toronto and recorded at least five tackles in seven games.

The 30-year-old California native also played in the Western Final and Grey Cup, recording a total of six tackles.

“Brandon has been an excellent player for us for a number of years and it was good to see him finally recognized this past year with an all-star spot,” said Hufnagel. “I’m pleased that he has decided to remain in Calgary and look forward to him being an important part of our defence again next season.”

In six seasons with the Red and White, the two-time Grey Cup champion has 357 tackles, eight special-teams tackles, five sacks, four fumble recoveries, seven forced fumbles and eight interceptions including one for a touchdown. He missed the 2009 season with a knee injury.

“I’ve enjoyed my time in Calgary ever since I arrived in 2008 and I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else,” said Smith. “I’m grateful to be part of a great organization and to have the best group of teammates and coaches anyone could ever ask for. I also appreciate the fan support in Calgary and I look forward to trying to defend the Grey Cup championship in 2015.”
