About the Grey Cup

Some facts, figures and stories from the Stamps’ Grey Cup victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday in Vancouver.

Lucky No. 7

The Stamps’ championship was their seventh in franchise history. That puts Calgary in a tie for fourth place among CFL teams when it comes to number of Grey Cups won since the Stampeders were born in 1945.

Grey Cups since 1945

Edmonton – 13
Toronto – 11
Hamilton – 8
Calgary – 7
Montreal – 7
Winnipeg – 7
BC – 6
Ottawa – 6
Saskatchewan – 4

Five of the Stamps’ championships have come since 1992, which makes Calgary the most successful franchise over that period.

Grey Cups since 1992

Calgary – 5
BC – 4
Toronto – 4
Edmonton – 3
Montreal – 3
Saskatchewan – 2
Baltimore – 1
Hamilton – 1

Big win total

The Stamps are just the sixth team in CFL history to win 17 combined regular-season and post-season games in one year. The only team that won more — the 1995 Baltimore Stallions won 18 — managed the feat thanks to a playoff system at that time that forced first-place clubs to play in the semifinal round. This year’s Stamps club had a bye to the Western Final and thus played only two post-season games.

Most wins in a season:

18 – 1995 Baltimore Stallions (15 in regular season and three in post-season)
17 – 2014 Calgary Stampeders (15, 2)
17 – 1995 Calgary Stampeders (15, 2)
17 – 1996 Toronto Argonauts (15, 2)
17 – 1997 Toronto Argonauts (15, 2)
17 – 2009 Montreal Alouettes (15, 2)

Bo’s big day

Bo Levi Mitchell joined a distinguished group on Sunday when he was named the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Player. The Calgary quarterback is the sixth Stampeders player to be so honoured, following in the footsteps of Wayne Harris (1971), Doug Flutie (1992), Jeff Garcia (1998), Marcus Crandell (2001) and Henry Burris (2008). The award did not exist when the Stamps won the 1948 Grey Cup.

The 334 passing yards Mitchell accumulated were the third-best total by a Stamps QB in a Grey Cup, surpassed only by Flutie’s whopping 480 yards against Winnipeg in 1992 and Danny Barrett’s 377 yards in a losing cause against Toronto in 1991.

Mitchell also passed for 80 yards in relief work during the 2012 Grey Cup and has 414 career passing yards in the championship game. Only Flutie (767) has more.

Drew doubles up

Short-yardage quarterback Drew Tate rushed for only three yards on Sunday but he made them count. Two of those yards came on goal-line carries and produced a pair of touchdowns.

No other Stampeder has even scored two Grey Cup rushing touchdowns in his career, let alone in a game. Prior to Sunday, 10 different players had accounted for the Stamps’ 10 all-time rushing touchdowns in the Grey Cup.

Catching on quickly

Receiver Eric Rogers has only played two career regular-season games in the CFL but he’s already made an impact on the Stampeders’ playoff record books.

In the Western Final, he tied a franchise record with two touchdown games in a playoff game. In the Grey Cup contest, he became only the eighth Stampeder to record a 100-yard receiving game.

Stamps 100-yard receivers in Grey Cup

162 Derrick Crawford (1992)
136 Carl Bland (1991)
122 Nik Lewis (2008)
116 Carl Bland (1992)
114 Marc Boerigter (2001)
113 David Sapunjis (1995)
108 Eric Rogers (2014)

101 Travis Moore (1999)

Big man on a horse

In 1998, offensive lineman Rocco Romano asked Quick Six rider Karyn Drake if he could get aboard the Stampeders’ famous touchdown horse. Just like that, one of the most iconic images in Stampeders Grey Cup history was born.

The tradition continued on Sunday when 313-lb. offensive lineman Stanley Bryant jumped on the horse, grabbed a Stampeders flag and did a victory lap. Before the celebration was over, fellow o-lineman Spencer Wilson and quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell had also taken Quick Six for a spin.
