Most Outstanding Rookie candidates

This week, the Canadian Football League announced its list of players eligible for the 2014 Most Outstanding Rookie Award. Thirteen Stampeders qualify for the award. Here’s some information on the players who meet the requirements for this year’s voting:

Frank Beltre, #94, DL
Beltre signed with the Stamps as a free agent on Sept. 10. He has played five games and has registered three tackles, a tackle for a loss of three yards and one special-teams tackle.

Maalik Bomar, #47, LB
Bomar is a University of Cincinnati product who made the team out of training camp. He has played in three games and has two special-teams tackles and one fumble recovery.

Brander Craighead, #58, OL
Calgary’s first-round pick in 2013, Craighead has started seven games (four at left guard, three at right guard). He has contributed to an offensive line that has allowed the Stamps to lead the CFL in rushing offence and fewest sacks allowed.

Sederrik Cunningham, #89, REC
Cunningham has played nine games and has four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, two carries for 39 yards and a touchdown, returned 33 kickoffs for 712 yards (21.6 avg., 48 longest), 32 punts for 358 yards (11.2 avg., 67 longest) and a touchdown and one missed field goal for 33 yards. He got his first two CFL touchdowns against Ottawa on Aug. 24 — one on a 20-yard run and one on a 67-yard punt return. He got his first receiving TD on Sept. 13 against Toronto. 

Bradley Erdos, #53, OL
The Simon Fraser product and 2012 draft pick has dressed for one game, making his CFL debut on Sept. 21 in Montreal.

DeQuin Evans, #91, DL
Evans has played eight games and has registered 14 tackles and three sacks. He had five tackles in a Sept. 21 game against Montreal.

Buddy Jackson, #38, DB
Jackson, who joined the team’s practice roster last season but did not see action until 2014, has started 10 games at cornerback and has registered 35 tackles, a tackle for a loss of a yard and two knockdowns.

Pierre Lavertu, #63, OL
Lavertu, the first overall pick in the 2014 draft, has played 14 games and made two starts.

Bryant Moniz, #20, QB
The University of Hawaii product has dressed for 16 games. For Games 12 and 13, he was used in short-yardage situations and has six rushes for 17 yards.

Charlie Power, #46, FB
Power has played two games, making his CFL debut in the Labour Day Classic and getting into the lineup again on Oct. 24. 

Quinn Smith, #90, DL
Smith has played nine games and has seven tackles, including three tackles for a loss of four yards and a sack. In addition to his work on the defensive line, he is the Stamps’ emergency offensive lineman.

Adam Thibault, #41, DB
Thibault has played six games and has five special-teams tackles. He played his first CFL game on Aug. 9 against Ottawa.

Jeremy Williams, #37, DB
The Henderson State alum has dressed for two games.

In order to be eligible as a candidate for the League award for the “Most Outstanding First Year Player” (Rookie Award), a player must meet the following criteria:

He had, in the current season, been named to the active roster of a member Club of the Canadian Football League at the time it played in a regular-season game; and

He had not:

a) In any prior season dressed for a member Club of the Canadian Football League at the time it played in a regular season or playoff or championship game;

– and –

b) In the current season or in any prior season, dressed for a member Club in the National Football League, at the time it played in a regular season or post-season or championship game.

The Rookie of the Year is selected by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and CFL head coaches. The winner will be announced at the CFL Player Awards on Thursday, Nov. 27 in Vancouver ahead of the 102nd Grey Cup.
