Down by a dozen points on Friday, the Stampeders defence went to work.

Calgary kept the Saskatchewan Roughriders off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter and allowed the Stamps to turn a 27-15 deficit into a 40-27 victory.

But the Red and White “D” wasn’t satisfied with just preventing the Roughriders from getting points as they got into the scoring act. Jamar Wall returned an intercepted Kerry Joseph pass 50 yards for a touchdown. It was the Texas Tech’s first pick-six of his career.

Wall also sealed the contest by picking off a Joseph pass in the end-zone with less than a minute to go.

“It just came down to we had to come back and play together as a team,” said Wall of the Stamps’ ability to overcome the third-quarter deficit. “We had some adversity early but I mean, it happens.

“That showed us what we are as a team. We trusted our instincts, we trusted the plays would come to us and we started making plays.”

Defensive coordinator Rich Stubler issued a challenge to his troops at halftime.

“He basically told us to man up,” said Wall. “He told us we all want to be the best defence but we’re not playing like it.

“The guys we have in our group, we took that personally, so we came out, we let all that first half go and we came out and proved we can be a better defence.

“This is our third or so year of playing together and we’re finally molding. Stubes said at the beginning of the year, it will be special if we all just buy in, and that’s what we do.”

With his two picks on Friday, Wall shares the league lead with six interceptions. Brandon Smith also had an interception against the Riders while Shawn Lemon, Junior Turner and Brandon Jordan recorded sacks.
