Here’s a closer look at Saturday’s 33-23 first-place-clinching victory over the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg:

Stamps take next step

First, it was clinching a playoff spot.

Then it was securing a home game in the post-season.

Now the Calgary Stampeders have taken one more step to what they hope is the ultimate payoff as they have locked up first place in the West Division and will host the Western Final on Nov. 23.

The Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders both had a chance to catch the Stampeders for top spot in the West heading into the week but the Calgary victory in Winnipeg assures the Red and White of an 18th division title in franchise history.

The Stamps have finished first four times in seven years under John Hufnagel’s tutelage

West Division titles since 1946:

  • Edmonton (22)
  • Calgary (18)
  • BC (13)
  • Winnipeg (9)
  • Saskatchewan (7)

West Division titles since 1990:

  • Calgary (12)
  • BC (7)
  • Edmonton (5)
  • Saskatchewan (1)

Huff joins pair of greats

With the win in Winnipeg, John Hufnagel’s career coaching record improved to 86-36-1.

He joins Hall-of-Famers Wally Buono (254-139-3) and Don Matthews (231-133-1) as the only coaches in CFL history with a career mark that is at least 50 games over .500.

Coach Huff owns the best career winning percentage (.703) of any coach with at least 100 games.

Cornish closes in on 1,000

Jon Cornish’s 160 yards rushing in Winnipeg left him at 977 yards for the year, just 23 yards shy of his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.

He’s poised to become the sixth player in franchise history to record at least three 1,000-yard seasons. It’s a group that currently features Kelvin Anderson, Joffrey Reynolds, Earl Lunsford, James Sykes and Lovell Coleman.

During the contest against the Blue Bombers, Cornish reached 6,117 career rushing yards and moved past Sean Millington and into 24th place on the CFL’s all-time list. He’s just eight yards back of Willie Fleming (6,125) for 23rd place.

Saturday also marked the fourth time this season Cornish has rushed for at least 150 yards in a game. He’s the franchise leader with 11 career games with 150-yards plus.

Despite playing just eight of the Stamps’ 15 games this season, Cornish holds a 128-yard lead over Saskatchewan’s Anthony Allen for the league lead in rushing heading into Sunday’s Eskimos-Roughriders contest.

Kings of the road

Saturday’s victory was the Stamps’ seventh on the road this season, a new high during John Hufnagel’s seven-year tenure as head coach and general manager.

The seven road wins also ties a franchise record first set in 1948 and matched in 1995.

Calgary is 40-22 away from McMahon Stadium since the start of the 2008 season.
