The Calgary Stampeders have added international quarterback Nathan Stanley, international offensive lineman Nyere Aumaitre, international linebacker TraShaun Nixon, international defensive lineman Quinton Spears and international defensive backs Ryan Mouton and Brandon Underwood to the practice roster.
CFL teams are permitted to carry up to 15 practice-roster players (up from the usual 10) for the final month of the regular season.
Here is more information on the newcomers:
Nathan Stanley: Signed as an undrafted free agent by the National Football League’s Baltimore Ravens in 2013. Stanley signed with the Arena Football League’s San Jose SaberCats in 2014 and threw for 2,436 yards and 50 touchdowns. Stanley played his final two college seasons (2011-12) at Southeastern Louisiana. As a senior with the Lions in 2012, he threw for 1,952 yards and nine touchdowns. He attended the University of Mississippi before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana.
Nyere Aumaitre: Spent time on the BC Lions’ practice roster in 2013. Aumaitre played four seasons in the Arena Football League, suiting up for the Philadelphia Soul in 2011, with the Cleveland Gladiators in 2012 and with the New Orleans VooDoo in 2013 and 2014. He played his college football at Iowa.
Quinton Spears: Signed with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Spears was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 4, 2011, and he played eight games for Cleveland during the 2011 season. He also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2014. Spears played defensive end at Prairie View A&M and was a three-time all-Southwestern Athletic Conference performer.
TraShaun Nixon: Nixon attended training camp with the Toronto Argonauts in 2014 and was also invited to a tryout camp with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints earlier this year. In college, Nixon played two seasons (2012-13) for New Mexico State. He was second on the Aggies with 93 tackles in 2013 and led the team with 13 tackles for loss and three sacks. Nixon earned second-team all-Western Athletic Conference honours in 2012 as he recorded 96 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception.
Ryan Mouton: Played 36 games for the NFL’s Tennesse Titans and has also spent time with the Washington Redskins. With Tennessee, he recorded 79 tackles and one forced fumble. He played at the University of Hawaii and was a first-team Western Athletic Conference all-star as a senior in 2008 after recording 43 tackles, including six tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and eight pass breakups.
Brandon Underwood: Played seven games with the Toronto Argonauts this season before being released on Aug. 31. He had 19 tackles, one special-teams tackle, two interceptions and one fumble recovery for the Argos. Underwood played two seasons with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers and has also been with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys. He was a first-team Big East all-star as a senior with the University of Cincinnati in 2008 as he led the Bearcats with four interceptions, including one that he returned for a touchdown, and also recorded 66 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
In other transactions, the Stampeders have released international linebacker Alvin Bowen and international quarterback Casey Pachall from the practice roster. Bowen played 13 games over two seasons for the Stamps — 11 in 2013 and two this season — while Pachall dressed for one game this season but did not see any game action.
