Stamps receiving corps gets a little Fuller

Friday night in Regina, the Calgary Stampeders will see the return of one of their biggest offensive threats as they line up against the defending Grey Cup champions, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Through the first seven games of the Stamps 2014 season, Jeff Fuller was shaping up to be one of Calgary’s leading receivers with 28 catches for 366 yards and five touchdowns.

An unfortunate shoulder injury against Hamilton would sideline Fuller for the next six contests and he worked to rehab the joint and get back on the field.

Now cleared for game action, the six-foot-four Texas A & M thoroughbred is champing at the bit to join his teammates when they take the field at Mosaic Stadium.

“It felt good to get the timing back right,” says the soft-spoken Fuller. “I think the training staff did a great job of getting everybody ready.”

This is Fuller’s first full season in the Red and White, having been acquired last September and playing in his first game in October, a 27-13 win over Edmonton where he pulled in four catches for 75 yards.

Because he was new to the team and the league, Fuller admits he didn’t quite appreciate the situation of Calgary’s Grey Cup chase, but understands now the special season his squad is having in 2014.

Looking to help put the Stamps over the hump this year and into the Grey Cup game, Fuller is hoping he can get up to speed quickly and contribute.

“I started pretty strong and hopefully I can get back to where I left off and continue this thing going,” he says.

His first chance will come in the unfriendly confines of Mosaic Stadium where the crowd always seems to turn up the hostility when their western rivals ride into town.

For his part, Fuller – who recorded his first 100-yard game against the Riders last year – is hoping for a loud, angry Gang Green-crazy crowd.

“I like to play in an atmospheres like that,” says Fuller. “I went to (Texas) A & M where we have our own crowd of 90,000 every game but then we’d go to Nebraska and stuff and it would be loud and those are always your best games when the crowds are hostile and everybody’s into it.”

He’ll most certainly get his wish when he takes the field Friday night, hoping to put the reigning champs a little further in the rear-view mirror.
