For a third consecutive week, Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has been honoured by the Canadian Football League in its weekly awards, this time claiming both offensive and Canadian player-of-the-week recognition.
Cornish has been voted Canadian player of the week in each of the past three weeks and was named top offensive player for both Week 10 and Week 12.
The latest honours come on the heels of Cornish’s outstanding performance in Saturday’s 40-33 comeback victory over the Toronto Argonauts. Cornish rushed for 174 yards including a spectacular 79-yard touchdown on what was the longest run of the eight-year veteran’s career.
Cornish also had four catches for 35 yards and a touchdown as well as another reception for a two-point convert. The convert tied the game while the receiving touchdown provided the Stamps with the winning points as Calgary tied a franchise record by erasing a 26-point deficit.
The New Westminster, B.C., product has rushed for 446 yards in the past three games and has climbed all the way up to third place in the CFL rushing race despite missing six of Calgary’s 11 games due to injury. Cornish has 587 rushing yards and four touchdowns to go with a league-best average of 7.8 yards per carry.
This marks the 24th time in Cornish’s career that he has been named Canadian player of the week and the sixth time he has earned offensive player-of-the-week honours.
