Drew is next man up

By Stampeders.com staff

One tally, the one on the scoreboard, showed a 40-33 Calgary victory.

The second, played out in the training room and doctors’ offices, was far less enjoyable for Stampeders fans.

No fewer than five players were knocked out of action Saturday including starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, leading receiver Marquay McDaniel, sack leader Charleston Hughes, defensive tackle Demonte’ Bolden and special-teams ace Ben D’Aguilar.

Head coach and general manager John Hufnagel provided a medical update Sunday morning.

“Bo has a sprained ankle and stretched ligaments in his knee, so he’ll be week-to-week and very doubtful for (the Montreal game next Sunday),” he said. “Marquay has a broken bone in his hand and Demonte’ has a broken bone in his leg and Charleston has a sprained foot. (McDaniel and Bolden) will likely go on (the six-game injury list) and Charleston is in the same boat as Bo is in that he’s game-to-game.”

D’Aguilar, who has a leg injury, will also be assessed on a week-to-week basis.

So once again, the Stamps’ depth will be tested. Already this season the team has survived the absences of key performers and starters such as Jon Cornish, Maurice Price, Joe West, Corey Mace, Brander Craighead and Dan Federkeil to build a 10-1 record.

The Stamps’ supporting players have answered the challenge so far and now it’s Drew Tate’s turn at quarterback.

“Drew knows how to play the position and I know he’ll be very, very excited for this opportunity to play more,” said Hufnagel.

Tate became the Stamps’ starter late in the 2011 season but has been hampered by injuries. He’s been very successful when active, however, posting a 5-0 record when he plays an entire game.

So far this season, Tate has completed nine of nine passes for 109 yards including six completions and two touchdowns in Saturday’s comeback after coming on in relief of Mitchell.

“We’re very fortunate to have two quarterbacks (who’ve had success as starters),” said Hufnagel. “If you go back to two-and-a-half months ago, it was a photo finish (in the training camp battle for the starting quarterback’s job). They’re both excellent quarterbacks and this is Drew’s time to play.”

The Stamps will bring in a fresh arm this coming week to fill the third active spot on the roster while Mitchell is out.

“We’ll have another arm in camp, hopefully by the time we get back on the field (on Tuesday),” said Hufnagel.
