It’s a testament to the kind of night Simon Charbonneau-Campeau had that his first career CFL touchdown had some competition for the Calgary receiver’s most important contribution of the night.
Charbonneau-Campeau’s second-quarter touchdown was part of the Stamps’ 41-point attack Saturday at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium and it was his soaring grab on an Eskimos onside kick in the final minute that preserved a Calgary victory.

Simon Charbonneau-Campeau picked up a souvenir Saturday — the ball from his first CFL touchdown. |
Charbonneau-Campeau looked a little bit like a rugby player when he leaped high into the air and came down with Hugh O’Neill’s bloop kick.
After Charbonneau-Campeau’s sure-handed play, the Stamps went into victory formation as Calgary improved to 9-1.
“I think the ball was in the air way too long for me,” said Charbonneau-Campeau in the happy Stampeders locker-room after the game. “I had to think about it and all, but it was a great feeling for sure.
“You’ve just got to focus on that ball — you don’t want to see the guys coming at you, and I think the guys on the front line did a pretty good job because I didn’t even feel a hit. My landing was pretty soft so the guys in front of me did a good job and I just had to focus on the ball and that’s what I did.”
The onside kick was a highlight of what has been a great season on special teams for the Universite de Sherbrooke receiver.
Charbonneau-Campeau has also chipped in offensively with several clutch grabs. Saturday was his best receiving performance as a Stamp as he made three catches for 53 yards and that aforementioned first career TD.
“It’s a great feeling,” said Charbonneau-Campeau. “I thank the coaching staff. I felt welcomed the first day I was here. I think the coach has great respect for the players and, when they bring you in, they have a reason for it, and I think that’s been good.”
Acquired in the off-season from Hamilton in exchange for receiver Spencer Armstrong, Charbonneau-Campeau came into the season with nine career catches for 115 years over 27 games in 2012 and 2013 for the Tiger-Cats. In 10 games with the Stamps, he has 10 catches for 178 yards.
