It’s time for another afternoon edition of About Last Night as we look back to the Stampeders’ latest game. In this case, we take a closer look at some of the storylines from Calgary’s win over Edmonton in the 2014 Labour Day Classic.
Ten in a row against Eskimos
The Stamps still have a long way to go to even the all-time score against the Edmonton Eskimos, but they’re giving it their best shot.
Monday’s win was Calgary’s 10th in a row against its provincial rival in the regular season, a streak that accounts for 11 per cent of the Stamps’ all-time victories over Edmonton. It’s worth noting at this point that the Stamps and Eskimos first started playing each other in 1949.
This marks the second-longest Calgary winning streak against Edmonton, surpassed only by a 12-win string from 1962-65.
Huff has Esks’ number
Monday’s win was the Stamps’ 17th regular-season victory over Edmonton with John Hufnagel at the controls.
That ties Hufnagel with Wally Buono for the most victories by a Calgary head coach against the Eskimos. The major difference is that Coach Huff’s wins have come in just 22 regular-season meetings with Edmonton while Buono needed 40 Battle of Alberta games.
Hufnagel is one of only five Stamps coaches to have a winning record against Edmonton. The others are Bobby Dobbs (10-2), Tom Higgins (7-3), Jerry Williams (7-4-1) and Joe Tiller (1-0).
Cornish has Esks’ number, too
In his second game back in the lineup after missing six contests with a concussion, Jon Cornish ran for 163 yards in the Labour Day Classic.
Cornish has made a habit of torching the Eskimos, picking up six 100-yard games in nine career starts (the 2011 West Division semifinal and eight regular-season games from 2012-14).
That only tells part of the story however as all six of Cornish’s triple-digit performances have been for at least 125 yards, with three going for 150 yards or more and two surpassing the 180-yard mark.
In the eight regular-season starts against the Eskimos, Cornish has galloped for 1,004 yards (an average of 125.5 yards per game) and averaged 7.7 yards per carry.
Double milestones for Double-M
In his typical unassuming manner, Stamps slotback Marquay McDaniel cracked a pair of career milestones during Monday’s contest.
McDaniel not only made his 300th career catch, he also surpassed 4,000 career receiving yards.
McDaniel continues to be a model of consistency — after making 76 catches for 1,047 yards a year ago, he’s only slightly behind that pace at the midway point of the 2014 season as he’s on track for 74 catches and 980 yards.
Great eight
The Stampeders are 8-1 through nine games for the second time under John Hufnagel and for the eighth time in franchise history.
The 2010 edition of the Red and White was also 8-1 to start the year under Coach Huff’s guidance.
Calgary had at least eight wins through the season’s first nine games on four occasions during the Wally Buono era including a 9-0 start in 1993 and 8-1 starts in 1994, 1995 and 1996.
The 1971 Stampeders were 8-1 after nine games in a 16-game schedule while the 1948 and 1949 teams both started the season 9-0.
