West is player of the week

Calgary Stampeders wide receiver Joe West has been named the Canadian Football League’s offensive player of the week for Week 9 as the three-year veteran out of the University of Texas-El Paso was honoured for his performance in Sunday’s 32-7 victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks.

West led all CFL players last week with 129 receiving yards as he recorded the third 100-yard game of his career. Two of his four receptions on Sunday came on spectacular plays that covered long distances — a 58-yard catch in the third quarter and a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter.

West has been the Stamps’ leading receiver in each of the past two weeks and he leads the CFL with an average of 24.4 yards per reception.

The receiver’s performance on Sunday was a courageous one as it came hours after he learned his younger brother had been the victim of a fatal shooting in Magnolia, Ark. After some deliberation, West decided to play and he dedicated the game to his brother’s memory.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank my teammates for their love and support at this difficult time,” said West. “I also want to thank all the fans for their prayers and condolences. You’ll never know how much your kind words have meant to me.”
