Classic showdown

One of the most eagerly anticipated Labour Day Classic games of all time is on tap as the Stampeders face the Edmonton Eskimos on Monday at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff for the contest, which is presented by Jayman, is 2:30 p.m.

With Calgary and Edmonton both 7-1 heading into this year’s Labour Day Classic, it marks the best combined winning percentage (.875) in the all-time Stampeders-Eskimos LDC series, which covers 48 games (this year’s game is the 49th). Here are the games with the best combined winning percentage going in:

.875 (2014 — Calgary 7-1, Edmonton 7-1)
.833 (1993 — Calgary 9-0, Edmonton 6-3)
.813 (1994 — Calgary 7-1, Edmonton 6-2)
.789 (1995 — Calgary 8-1, Edmonton 7-3)
.786 (1979 — Calgary 5-2, Edmonton 5-0-2)

The 48 Labour Day Classics cover the games played on the first Monday of September between the Stampeders and Eskimos in Calgary starting in 1959. The Stamps have a 22-25-1 record in the Labour Day Classic including a 6-2 mark in the eight most recent meetings.

Calgary and Edmonton have faced each other at McMahon Stadium on Labour Day every year since 1982 and in all but one season (1981) since 1969.

In addition to both sporting 7-1 records, the Stamps and Eskimos are both riding three-game winning streaks. Calgary was a 32-7 winner in Ottawa last week while the Eskimos posted a 41-27 home-field victory over the Toronto Argonauts.

The Alberta rivals hold down the top two spots in the CFL in both points scored and points allowed.

Calgary’s offence is averaging 27.9 points per game while Edmonton is scoring 26.8 points per contest. On defence, the Stamps are allowing a league-low 15.1 points per game while the Eskimos are second at 17.8.
