About last night…

Here’s another look at Saturday’s 30-20 Stampeders road victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Hammering Hamilton

Saturday’s win at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton allows the Stampeders to sweep the two-game season series as Calgary had previously defeated the Tiger-Cats 10-7 at McMahon Stadium in Week 4.

The Stamps have swept the season series three years in a row and have won six straight against the Tabbies, with the most recent Hamilton win dating back to Touchdown Atlantic in Moncton on Sept. 25, 2011. The starting quarterbacks that day were Henry Burris for Calgary and Kevin Glenn for Hamilton. They have since been traded for one another and then moved on to other teams — Ottawa (Burris) and BC (Glenn).

Calgary is 12-2 against the Ticats since John Hufnagel became head coach and general manager of the Stampeders prior to the 2008 season.

Go East, young men

Calgary extended another streak on Saturday as the Stamps have now won eight road games in a row against East Division opponents.

The Red and White previously won at Toronto’s Rogers Centre this season and swept the East teams on the road in 2013 with victories in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg (then a member of the East) and Guelph (the Ticats’ temporary home while Hamilton’s new stadium was being constructed).

The Stamps haven’t lost in the East since July 12, 2012, when they dropped a one-point decision to the Alouettes.

Sharing the wealth (continued)

Calgary went into Saturday’s contest having had five differing rushing leaders and five different receiving leaders in six games. Remarkably, the Stamps managed to add to those totals as new players led the way in both categories in the win over the Ticats.

With Hugh Charles making his Stamps debut and no fewer than four running backs on the injury list (Jon Cornish, Matt Walter, Jock Sanders and Martell Mallett) the emergence of a sixth different single-game rushing leader was predictable.

The ex-Eskimo and ex-Roughrider delivered a big performance with 102 yards, joining Mallett as the Stamps members of the 100-yard club in 2014.

Meanwhile, Joe West had 90 receiving yards to become the sixth different Stamp to lead the team in that category.

Here are the game-by-game leaders in rushing and receiving:

Game Rush Rec.
1 Cornish Price
2 Walter Parker
3 Walter Fuller
4 Sanders Fuller
5 Mallett Mallett
6 Cote McDaniel
7 Charles West

Stamps at 6-1

At 6-1, the Stamps have matched their best start in the 21st century.

Calgary was also 6-1 to start the 2010 campaign and you have to go back to 2000 when the Stamps came out of the gate 6-0-1 to find a better seven-game opening stretch.

After dropping a decision to the BC Lions on Aug. 1, the Stamps have won two straight and are now 16-6 in the month of August under John Hufnagel.

Over the past two years

Monday marks the two-year anniversary of a 22-14 Stampeders home-field loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

The setback was the fourth in six games for Calgary and left the Red and White with an underwhelming 3-4 record.

The Stamps finished the season with a 9-2 record, followed that up with a 14-4 mark in 2013 and are now 6-1 this season. That adds up to a 29-7 record over those two calendar years.

Here are the cumulative standings since Week 9 of the 2012 season (excluding Ottawa, which rejoined the league this season):

Cgy. (29-7)
BC (23-13)
Ssk. (21-15)
Tor. (19-17)
Mtl. (16-20)
Ham. (14-22)
Edm. (13-23)
Wpg. (12-25)
