About last night…

Here’s another look at Saturday’s 38-17 Stamps victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks at McMahon Stadium.

Two big plusses

Calgary continues to fare well in the sack and turnover categories as the Stamps won both stats by a 4-1 margin on Saturday.

The Stamps are plus-9 in turnover differential, tied with Saskatchewan for first place in the CFL, and are plus-12 in sacks (18 recorded and a league-low six allowed).

Bouncing back

With the win on the heels of a Week 6 setback against the BC Lions, the Stamps are now 26-6-1 after a loss in the John Hufnagel era (start of the 2008 season). Calgary hasn’t lost back-to-back games since Weeks 2 and 3 of the 2013 season.

Huff vs former assistants

Coach Huff continues to do extremely well against his former assistants. With the Stamps’ win over Ottawa and former Calgary defensive coordinator Rick Campbell on Saturday, Hufnagel is now 8-2 against products of his staff.

Here is a recap of those encounters:

Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — July 19, 2012 — 41-38 W (OT)
George Cortez (Ham) — Aug. 9, 2012 — 31-20 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Aug. 25, 2012 — 17-10 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Sept. 23, 2012 — 25-30 L
George Cortez (Ham) — Oct. 20, 2012 — 34-32 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — July 5, 2013 — 21-36 L
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Aug. 9, 2013 — 42-27 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Oct. 26, 2013 — 29-25 W
Chris Jones (Edm) — July 24, 2014 — 26-22 W
Rick Campbell (Ott) — Aug. 9, 2014 — 38-17 W

West is best

The West Division continues to dominate the East, with the left side of the country recording three wins in three Week 7 contests — Edmonton over Montreal, BC over Hamilton and Calgary over Ottawa.

The West is 16-2 against the East this season, a dominance which has resulted in very peculiar-looking standings. For instance, Toronto leads the East with a 2-4 record while BC is last in the West despite a 4-3 mark.

Three West Division teams — Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg — have as many wins (five) as all four East teams combined.

This year’s interdivisional is an extreme version of a trend that has held true every year since 2004, when the East posted a 23-17 record against the West. In each of the 10 subsequent seasons, including this year, the West has held the edge for a cumulative record of 197-116-1.

The most lopsided season came in 2008 when the West won 26 of the 32 contests against the East for a winning percentage of .813. So far in 2014, the West teams are ahead of that pace as they are beating the East at an .889 clip.

Sharing the wealth

Rob Cote was the Stamps’ leading rusher against the RedBlacks while Marquay McDaniel led the team in receiving yards. They are the fifth different players to lead Calgary in those categories in six games this season.

Injuries partially account for the variety of rushing leaders as Jon Cornish (Game 1 rushing leader), Matt Walter (Games 2 and 3) and Martell Mallett (Game 5) have all missed time.

Here are the game-by-game leaders in rushing and receiving:

Game Rush Rec.
1 Cornish Price
2 Walter Parker
3 Walter Fuller
4 Sanders Fuller
5 Mallett Mallett
6 Cote McDaniel

In case you missed it . . .
