The Stampeders earned a share of first place in the West Division by defeating the Ottawa RedBlacks 38-17 at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
The Stamps, who suffered their first loss of the season last week, rebounded by scoring a season high in points. Calgary is tied with the Edmonton Eskimos at 5-1 while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are 5-2 in the ultra-competitive West.
The expansion RedBlacks, who were making their first-ever visit to Calgary, fall to 1-5.
Calgary took a 21-0 lead with 2:30 to play in the first half and the RedBlacks never got any closer than within 14 points of their hosts.
“I thought our team played well in all three phases,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. “We played fast and make some plays out there offensively, defensively and special teams. We were able to get a lead and hang onto the lead.”
Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns, with Jeff Fuller, Marquay McDaniel and Jabari Arthur each recording a major. Mitchell also scored an eight-yard rushing touchdown on a fake-field goal play to open the scoring.
The Stamps stretched their lead thanks to a 17-yard touchdown catch by Fuller and a 22-yarder by McDaniel.
Ottawa got on the board with 1:36 to go in the first half when Chevon Walker scored on a one-yard run but the Stamps quickly replied with a 17-yard TD catch by Arthur. The late score was set up by a 45-yard kickoff return by Anthony Parker and a 23-yard catch by McDaniel, who finished the night with a team-leading nine receptions for 117 yards.
The veteran slotback heaped praise on the man delivering those throws.
“He looked comfortable to me, getting the ball out of his hands, spreading the ball around,” said McDaniel of Mitchell. “He did a good job looking for everybody.”
Seven different Stampeders recorded at least one catch on the day.
Calgary was held to three field goals — Rene Paredes converted from 12, 40 and 28 yards — and a 53-yard Rob Maver punt single in the second half but Ottawa also managed just 10 points.
Brett Maher kicked a 32-yard field goal for the RedBlacks while Henry Burris connected with Wallace Miles for a 32-yard touchdown pass.
Jamar Wall and Joshua Bell each picked off a Burris pass while the Stamps recorded four sacks, with Lin-J Shell, Charleston Hughes, Micah Johnson and Freddie Bishop III each recording one.
The Stamps will be on the road next week as they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday in a 1 p.m. MDT start.
