After dipping into the practice roster to get a starting running back for Week 6, the Calgary Stampeders found their first 100-yard rusher of the 2014 campaign.

And he got it done by halftime.

Despite playing his first professional football game in five years, Stampeders running back Martell Mallet was one of the Red and White’s standouts in a heart-wrenching 25-24 loss to the BC Lions on Friday at McMahon Stadium.

“I came out and I was comfortable,” Mallett said. “Its football, it’s just like riding a bike. It comes back to you.”

The 2009 CFL rookie of the year also led the team in receiving, collecting 59 yards on a team-high six catches. But despite his admirable comeback game, Mallet was disappointed with the result.

“We played a good first half but that¹s not enough to win a football game,” Mallett said. “I didn’t want to come back into the locker room after my first game 4-1. I wanted to come back 5-0 and that didn’t happen.”

After suffering their first loss of 2014, Mallett and the Stampeders will be determined to learn from their Week 6 mistakes and come back strong.

“I feel like I did okay,” said Mallett, who was disappointed about dropping a fumble in the third quarter. “There was a lot I left out on the field. I have to get better as an individual and we have to get better collectively. We just have to go out next week, have a great (week of) practice and get another ‘W.’ ”
