About last night …

Here’s another look at the Stamps’ tough 25-24 loss to the BC Lions Friday night at McMahon Stadium.

Marvelous Martell

It was an impressive Stamps debut for running back Martell Mallett, who was playing his first regular-season game since the 2009 season. In addition to cracking the 100-yard plateau on the ground, Mallett led the Stampeders with six catches for 59 yards.

It was Mallett’s third career 100-yard game and his first since Sept. 25, 2009, when he ran for 136 yards as a member of the BC Lions against the Stampeders. His best career contest remains the impressive 213-yard total he racked up against the Montreal Alouettes on Sept. 4, 1999.

Mallett left the CFL after being named rookie of the year in 2009 to try his luck in the National Football League. He joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2012 but never played a game for the Tabbies because of a season-ending Achilles tendon injury.

Rare home disappointment

Friday’s loss was just the second at home for the Stampeders during the regular season since August of 2012 (compared to 15 victories).

Both McMahon Stadium setbacks over the past two years were close as Friday’s one-point loss was preceded by a six-point defeat (33-27) against the Toronto Argonauts on Sept. 21, 2013.

Looking to bounce back

The Stamps have won far often than they’ve lost during the John Hufnagel era and one of the major reasons has been the club’s ability to bounce back after a disappointing result.

Since the start of the 2008 campaign, Calgary is 25-6-1 the week after a loss and the Red and White will be looking to continue that trend on Saturday, Aug. 9 when the Ottawa Redblacks visit McMahon Stadium. The Stamps have never lost more than two games in a row under Hufnagel.

Keon ends drought

Keon Raymond is the Stamps’ active leader in interceptions, but a long time passed between picks No. 15 and 16.

On Oct. 20, 2012, he picked off former teammate Henry Burris and ran the ball back 100 yards for a touchdown. Then on Friday, some 650 days later, he stole a pass from BC’s Kevin Glenn — also a former teammate — and scampered 63 yards for the major.

After picking off five passes in both 2011 and 2012, Raymond had an inexplicable butter-fingered season in 2013 as several balls slipped through his hands. That drought came to an end on Friday.

No fewer than four of Raymond’s 16 career interceptions have been returned for touchdowns. Only William Hampton, who had five, has more pick-sixes in Stamps history.

Raymond also moved past Harvey Wyile, Greg Peterson, Ron Hopkins and Hampton to move into seventh place in Stamps history with 456 career interception-return yards.
