About last night…

David Moll

Here’s another look at Calgary’s 26-22 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium in a battle of the CFL’s final two remaining unbeaten teams.

4-0

The Stamps are 4-0 for the 11th time in franchise history and for first time since the 1996 season. The club’s best-ever start came in 1948 when Calgary won all 12 games in a 12-game season.

Previous season-opening winning streaks of at least four games by the Stamps:

Year                  Start                 Final record

7-0

Two Stampeders quarterbacks are now tied for the CFL record with wins in their first seven career starts.

On Thursday, Bo Levi Mitchell joined Jeff Garcia, who played for the Stamps from 1994-98, as the only QBs to go 7-0 as starters to begin their careers. Mitchell’s win over the Eskimos comes two days shy of the anniversary of his first career victory, a 37-24 decision over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on July 26, 2013.

Four of Mitchell’s victories have come on the road including two wins at Commonwealth Stadium.

Mitchell’s career wins:

July 26, 2013 at Winnipeg (37-24)
Sept. 6, 2013 at Edmonton (22-12)
Sept. 13, 2013 vs Hamilton (26-22)
June 28, 2014 vs Montreal (29-8)
July 12, 2014 at Toronto (34-15)
July 18, 2014 vs Hamilton (10-7)
July 24, 2014 at Edmonton (26-22)

Block party

Keenan MacDougall’s blocked punt-recovery-touchdown at the expense of Grant Shaw on Thursday was the second by a Stamps player in the two most recent visits to Edmonton. On Oct. 18, 2013, Jamar Wall turned the trick en route to a 27-13 Calgary victory.

>> Wall’s big play

The last time the Stamps blocked a punt against a team other than Edmonton came on Nov. 5, 2011, when Chris McCoy stuffed a punt attempt by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Jamie Boreham.

Right place, right time

MacDougall’s touchdown on Thursday was the second of his CFL career. The first score came in his professional debut as he recovered a fumble 63 yards for a touchdown on July 1, 2012, against the Montreal Alouettes.

Huff moves up the charts

Thursday’s win was the 77th of John Hufnagel’s coaching career. That ties him with former Tiger-Cats and Alouettes coach Jim Trimble (1956-65) for 13th place in CFL history.

Because Coach Huff’s 77 wins have come in just 112 games, his career winning percentage of .692 ranks second only to Hugh Campbell’s .755.

Best career winning percentage (minimum 80 games)

Hugh Campbell (Edm) — .755
John Hufnagel (Cgy) — .692
Marc Trestman (Mtl) — .656
Wally Buono (Cgy, BC) — .645
Bud Grant (Wpg) — .644
Don Matthews (BC, Tor, Ssk, Balt, Edm, Mtl) — .634

Huff vs former assistants

With his victory over Chris Jones on Thursday night, Coach Huff improves his regular-season record to 7-2 when facing a former member of his coaching staff as a head coach for another club.

Here is a recap of those encounters:

Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — July 19, 2012 — 41-38 W (OT)
George Cortez (Ham) — Aug. 9, 2012 — 31-20 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Aug. 25, 2012 — 17-10 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Sept. 23, 2012 — 25-30 L
George Cortez (Ham) — Oct. 20, 2012 — 34-32 W
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — July 5, 2013 — 21-36 L
Corey Chamblin (Ssk) — Aug. 9, 2013 — 42-27 W

In addition to Chamblin, Cortez and Jones, former Coach Huff assistant Rick Campbell — who served as Calgary’s running backs coach in 2010 and his defensive coordinator from 2012-13 — is head coach of the Ottawa RedBlacks. Calgary’s first meeting with the expansion RedBlacks is on Aug. 9 at McMahon Stadium.
