Jeff Garcia hasn’t exactly been living in mortal fear of Bo Levi Mitchell — or anyone else, for that matter — breaking his Canadian Football League record for most consecutive wins at the start of a career by a starting quarterback.
“I didn’t even know I had the record until I read a few stories about Bo getting close to it,” the former Stamps pivot said with a chuckle. “I had no idea I started 7-0.”
Let the record show that Garcia did indeed win his first seven decisions with the Red and White in 1995 after taking over for the injured Doug Flutie. The streak started in, of all places, Birmingham, Ala., on Aug. 26, 1995, continued the following week in a Labour Day Classic rout of the Eskimos in which he threw for 546 yards and six touchdowns and kept on going with another win over Edmonton, two against Winnipeg and one each against Toronto and BC.
“I’ve never been one to dwell on records and statistics,” said Garcia. “To me, it’s all about winning football games. So what I would say to Bo is to get one more win to tie the master. Well, the self-proclaimed master.”
Garcia laughs and modifies his encouragement: “I’d tell him to get one more win to tie his buddy.”
As has been fairly well documented by now, Mitchell spent a portion of his off-season working with Garcia at the latter’s QB academy in San Diego. Also in attendance were young NFL pivots such as Matt McGloin of the Oakland Raiders, Tyrod Taylor of the Baltimore Ravens and Matt Scott of the Cincinnati Bengals.
