Here are excerpts from head coach and general manager John Hufnagel’s comments to media Friday in Toronto:
On the approach to this week’s game considering all the key injuries to offensive players
It’s just like any other game. You deal with the injuries as they occur and hopefully there are not a lot of them. But it’s no different than any other game — we’re playing a good football team on the road and it’s a great challenge. It will be an indication of where our football team is.
On whether he feels the team is unlucky
No. Those injuries are unfortunate and freakish but you just have to take it in stride.
How do you explain that Stamps have had a road winning percentage of better than .600 since you became head coach/GM?
I don’t think I need to explain it — that’s our job is to win football games, whether it’s at home or on the road. Our guys do a good job when they get off the airplane and making sure they’re doing the things they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities. We try to give ourselves a chance to win.
On Matt Walter and his playing style
Matt, in my belief, is a very excellent running back. He’s done everything that we’ve asked of him. He’s been explosive, he’s been powerful, he’s had good ball security, he’s caught the ball out of the backfield. We drafted Matt for a reason — because he was a good football player and we’re very fortunate that he is a Calgary boy who wanted to be in Calgary. We were able to acquire him later in the draft (in the fifth round) but that’s no reflection on his ability. Matt is very similar to Jon Cornish. Now I’m not comparing the two, but for the first couple of years, Matt has been a very good special teams player for us and now it’s the same as it was last year — coming into Toronto, he has a chance to get more of the workload.
On Walter and Toronto national running back Anthony Coombs representing an upgrade in the quality of CIS football
For sure. I said that in my first year back in the league, how much improved CIS football had become. And it’s gotten better since then.
