A night to remember

Tyler Crapigna had a night to remember, kicking the game-winning field goal to decide the Stampeders’ opening pre-season game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 23-20 at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night.

In his first CFL game after being drafted this past May out of McMaster with Calgary’s 40th overall selection, Crapigna split the uprights from 42 yards out as time expired. After connecting on one of two field goals prior to his final attempt, Crapigna was confident jogging out onto the field with the game on the line.

“I was a little nervous for it, missing the first kick and all, but coming back for the second one I felt good and the third one I kind of had a feeling I was going to make it,” he said following the game, but not before he made a call to his parents back home in Ottawa. “They were crying and happy and screaming so it was good to call them right after.”

Crapgina’s experience in high-pressure situations at the CIS level was put to good use, and he also pointed out the extra motivation he felt after he was unable to add another three points on the scoreboard early in the 4th quarter.

“I’ve been in some of these situations before playing in the Vanier Cup a couple years ago but I was happy just to get another chance to show what I can do,” he said. “I definitely didn’t want to end on that missed field goal.”

With regard to the two returning all-star kickers in Rene Paredes and Rob Maver, arguably the strongest special teams duo in the CFL last season, Crapigna appreciates the knowledge they have passed down to him throughout training camp.

“I’m just coming in here to learn from these guys,” he said. “They’re two of the best in the business that are ahead of me and I’m just trying to learn everything that they know.”

While earning a roster spot may be an uphill battle, Crapigna is committed sticking with the Stamps and is excited for his future in the professional ranks.

“I’m just trying to be a part of this team,” he said. “I want to make this team and that’s been my goal since day one. I’ve come in here and hopefully with this effort tonight and next week’s pre-season game, I’ll be able to make this team.”
